(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

One who knows that he is accountable for his speech should shorten his speech.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of being mindful of our words and the responsibility we have for them. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to be concise and precise in our speech, recognizing that we will be held accountable for every word we utter.

To fully understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. The word (mu'akhadh) "مُؤاخَذٌ" in Arabic refers to being held accountable or responsible for something. It implies that there will be consequences for our words, and we will be answerable for them. The word (qawlihi) "قَوْلِهِ" means speech or words. It encompasses both verbal and written expressions.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that highlight the importance of guarding our tongues and being mindful of our speech. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:36),

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

This verse reminds us that we will be held accountable for what we say, as well as what we hear and see. It emphasizes the importance of acquiring knowledge before speaking and refraining from spreading rumors or engaging in idle talk.

Another verse that supports the message of the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Qalam (68:10), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is fully aware of our intentions and actions. Therefore, we should strive to be cautious and deliberate in our speech, ensuring that our words are in line with the guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to "shorten our speech" when we are aware of the accountability that comes with it. This does not mean that we should refrain from speaking altogether, but rather, we should be mindful of the quality and quantity of our words. By being concise in our speech, we can avoid unnecessary and potentially harmful discussions. This practice not only reflects wisdom and self-control but also helps us to avoid slipping into falsehood or engaging in gossip.

Shortening our speech can have profound consequences in our personal and social lives. It allows us to focus on meaningful and beneficial conversations, fostering understanding and harmony among individuals. It also helps us to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts that may arise from careless or excessive speech. Moreover, by being mindful of our words, we can cultivate a sense of integrity and sincerity in our interactions, earning the trust and respect of others.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to emulate the wisdom and knowledge of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His exemplary character and profound understanding of Islam serve as a guiding light for all Muslims. Let us remember that our words hold great power and that we will be held accountable for them. By shortening our speech and being mindful of our words, we can fulfill our responsibility as believers and strive for the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to speak with wisdom and righteousness.
