(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Believer)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "المؤمن بعمله" which translates to

A believer is [gauged] by his actions.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon the importance of their deeds in determining their faith.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. The word (mu'min) "مؤمن" refers to a believer, someone who has faith in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and follows the teachings of Islam. (bi'amalihi) "بعمله" means "by his actions," indicating that the true measure of a person's faith lies in their deeds and conduct.

This concept of faith being reflected through actions is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3),

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse highlights the importance of not only believing but also acting righteously and encouraging others to do the same.

Another verse that supports the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:14), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

The Bedouins say, 'We have believed.' Say, 'You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'

This verse emphasizes that true faith is not merely a claim but is demonstrated through obedience to Allah and His Messenger ().

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that faith is not limited to mere words or beliefs; rather, it is a comprehensive way of life that encompasses one's actions, intentions, and character. It is through our actions that our faith is truly tested and manifested.

The consequences of this Hadith are profound. It encourages Muslims to be mindful of their actions and to strive for righteousness in all aspects of their lives. It reminds us that our deeds are a reflection of our faith and that we will be held accountable for them in the Hereafter. This Hadith motivates us to engage in acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, and charity, with sincerity and devotion, knowing that they are a means of strengthening our faith.

Furthermore, this Hadith also highlights the importance of knowledge and understanding in shaping our actions. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and his teachings continue to guide Muslims today. By seeking knowledge and understanding the teachings of Islam, we can ensure that our actions are in accordance with the principles of our faith.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

A believer is [gauged] by his actions

serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to prioritize their actions and strive for righteousness. It emphasizes that true faith is not limited to words or beliefs alone but is demonstrated through our deeds. By aligning our actions with the teachings of Islam and seeking knowledge, we can strengthen our faith and strive to be true believers in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to live our lives in accordance with this profound Hadith.
