(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Through moderate [and unbiased] speech loftiness is affirmed.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this amazing Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (bi-'adl) "بِعَدْلِ" in the Hadith refers to "moderate" or "just" speech. It emphasizes the importance of speaking in a balanced and fair manner, without any bias or prejudice. This means that one should avoid extremes in their speech, neither exaggerating nor diminishing the truth. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of maintaining a middle ground in our communication.
The term (al-manṭiq) "المَنْطِقِ" in the Hadith refers to "speech" or "expression." It encompasses all forms of verbal communication, including conversations, debates, and public addresses. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that it is through this moderate speech that (jalālah) "جَلالَةُ" or "loftiness" is affirmed.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),
And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.
This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking in the best possible manner, choosing words that are kind, respectful, and beneficial. By doing so, we can avoid falling into the traps of Satan, who seeks to create discord and division among us.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of avoiding ridicule, insults, and offensive language towards others. Instead, we are encouraged to treat each other with respect and dignity, recognizing that superiority lies in righteousness and piety.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that through moderate speech, we can affirm "loftiness." This loftiness refers to the elevation of our character, intellect, and influence. When we communicate with fairness, balance, and wisdom, we gain the respect and admiration of others. Our words carry weight and impact, and we become a source of guidance and inspiration for those around us.
By practicing moderate speech, we can avoid the pitfalls of extremism and polarization. We can bridge gaps, foster understanding, and promote unity among Muslims. Our words have the power to motivate positive change, resolve conflicts, and build strong relationships. Conversely, when we engage in biased or extreme speech, we risk alienating others, causing division, and perpetuating misunderstandings.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of speaking with moderation and fairness. By doing so, we affirm our own loftiness and contribute to the betterment of our communities. Let us strive to emulate the noble qualities of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), particularly his profound knowledge and wisdom, as we navigate our interactions with others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in our speech and grant us the ability to communicate in a manner that brings about unity, understanding, and righteousness.
