(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wealth And Riches)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

بِرُكُوبِ الأهْوالِ تُكْتَسَبُ الأمْوالُ۔

This can be translated as:

It is by overcoming [one’s] fears that wealth is acquired.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful saying in light of the Quranic teachings. The word (ahwal) "أهْوالِ" in the Hadith refers to fears or anxieties that one may encounter in life. These fears can be related to various aspects such as financial insecurity, social status, personal relationships, or even the fear of failure. The word (tuktasabu) "تُكْتَسَبُ" means to acquire or gain, and (al-amwal) "الأمْوالُ" refers to wealth or material possessions.

To understand the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says: (Quran 2:155)

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse highlights that fear is an inevitable part of life's trials and tribulations. It is through these challenges that we are tested and given the opportunity to grow and acquire wealth, not just in the material sense, but also in terms of knowledge, wisdom, and spiritual enrichment.

When we confront our fears head-on and overcome them, we develop resilience, determination, and the ability to persevere. This inner strength and courage enable us to face the difficulties that come our way and seize opportunities for growth and success. It is through this process of overcoming our fears that we acquire the wealth of knowledge, skills, and experiences that contribute to our overall well-being and prosperity.

Moreover, the Quran emphasizes the importance of trust in Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and reliance on Him during times of fear and uncertainty. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says: (Quran 3:139)

So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers.

This verse reminds us that true believers should not allow fear to weaken their resolve or cause them distress. Instead, they should place their trust in Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and have faith in His divine plan. By relying on Allah's guidance and seeking His assistance, believers can overcome their fears and achieve success in both worldly and spiritual matters.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the connection between overcoming fears and acquiring wealth. This wealth is not limited to material possessions but encompasses all aspects of human prosperity. By conquering our fears, we gain the confidence and resilience needed to navigate life's challenges, pursue opportunities, and attain true success.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that it is through overcoming our fears that we acquire wealth. This wealth extends beyond material possessions and includes knowledge, wisdom, and spiritual growth. By facing our fears with courage, relying on Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and trusting in His divine plan, we can overcome obstacles, seize opportunities, and attain true prosperity in this life and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to overcome our fears and acquire the wealth of success in all its forms.
