لايُدْرَكُ الْعِلْمُ بِراحَةِ الجِسْمِ۔
Knowledge is not attained with physical comfort.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لايُدْرَكُ الْعِلْمُ بِراحَةِ الجِسْمِ۔
This impactful saying emphasizes the fact that true knowledge cannot be acquired solely through physical comfort. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ" in this Hadith refers to deep understanding and insight into various aspects of life, including religious knowledge, worldly knowledge, and spiritual knowledge. It encompasses the understanding of Allah's commands, the principles of faith, and the wisdom behind His creation. This knowledge is not limited to theoretical information but also includes practical implementation in our daily lives.
The phrase (with physical comfort) "بِراحَةِ الجِسْمِ" highlights the misconception that knowledge can be attained effortlessly, without any struggle or sacrifice. It reminds us that true knowledge requires effort, dedication, and a willingness to step out of our comfort zones. It is through challenges and hardships that we grow intellectually and spiritually.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support this concept. In Surah Al-Ankabut, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (29:2)
Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?
This verse reminds us that trials and difficulties are an integral part of the journey towards knowledge and faith. It is through these challenges that we are tested and our knowledge is refined.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (2:214)
Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while such [trial] has not yet come to you as came to those who passed on before you?
This verse emphasizes that knowledge and spiritual growth require perseverance and endurance in the face of trials and tribulations. It is through these tests that we acquire wisdom and deepen our understanding of the truth.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that knowledge cannot be attained without effort and sacrifice. It encourages us to seek knowledge actively, to engage in continuous learning, and to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. It reminds us that true knowledge is not limited to academic pursuits but encompasses all aspects of life, including our spiritual journey.
For example, if we desire to deepen our understanding of the Quran, we must dedicate time and effort to studying its meanings, reflecting upon its verses, and implementing its teachings in our lives. Similarly, if we aspire to gain knowledge in any field, we must be willing to invest our time and energy in research, study, and practical application.
The consequences of neglecting this principle are evident in society today. Many individuals seek quick and easy solutions, relying on superficial knowledge or hearsay. This lack of depth and understanding leads to misunderstandings, misconceptions, and even misinterpretations of religious teachings. It is only through sincere effort and a genuine thirst for knowledge that we can overcome these challenges and acquire true understanding.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we are reminded of the importance of seeking knowledge with sincerity and humility. It encourages us to be proactive in our pursuit of knowledge, to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and to recognize that true knowledge is a lifelong journey. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to seek knowledge with dedication and perseverance.
