(Ghurar al-Hikam: Gratitude And The Grateful)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

شُكْرُ نِعْمَة سالِفَة يَقْضي بِتَجَدُّدِ نِعَم مُسْتَأنِفَة۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of expressing gratitude for past blessings, as it leads to the arrival of renewed blessings.

Let us delve into the meanings of some key words in this Hadith. (shukr) "شُكْرُ" refers to gratitude or thankfulness. It involves acknowledging and appreciating the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). (ni'mah) "نِعْمَة" signifies blessings or favors, which can be both material and spiritual in nature. (salifah) "سالِفَة" refers to past or previous blessings. (tajaddud) "تَجَدُّدِ" means renewal or the coming of something new. (ni'am) "نِعَمْ" represents blessings that are yet to come, blessings that are continuous and ongoing.

To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This verse highlights the direct correlation between gratitude and the abundance of blessings. When we express gratitude for the blessings we have received in the past, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises to increase us in favor.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Nahl (16:18), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

This verse reminds us of the countless blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), which are beyond our ability to fully comprehend or enumerate. It is through gratitude that we acknowledge and appreciate these blessings.

Now, let us reflect on the impactful message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, teaches us that expressing gratitude for past blessings is not only a sign of appreciation but also a means to attract renewed blessings. When we are grateful for the blessings we have received, we are demonstrating humility and recognizing that these blessings are not solely a result of our own efforts, but rather a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

By expressing gratitude, we are opening ourselves up to receiving even more blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This is because gratitude is a form of worship that pleases Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strengthens our relationship with Him. It is a way of acknowledging His infinite mercy and benevolence.

Moreover, gratitude has a transformative effect on our own mindset and attitude. When we focus on the blessings we have, rather than what we lack, we cultivate a positive outlook and develop contentment. This contentment allows us to navigate through life's challenges with resilience and patience.

Conversely, ingratitude and neglecting to appreciate the blessings we have can lead to a sense of entitlement and dissatisfaction. This attitude distances us from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and hinders the arrival of renewed blessings.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of expressing gratitude for past blessings. By doing so, we invite the arrival of renewed blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Gratitude is not only a means of acknowledging Allah's favors upon us but also a way to strengthen our relationship with Him and cultivate a positive mindset. Let us strive to be grateful Muslims, appreciating the blessings we have and eagerly anticipating the arrival of even more blessings from our Generous and Merciful Lord.
