If something happens between you and your enemy, which leads you to a truce and the enacting of a peace treaty, then preserve your pact with loyalty and guard your pledge with trust, and make your soul a shield between you and that which you have pledged.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Keeping Promises And Fulfilling Pledges)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he advises us on the importance of upholding our commitments and maintaining trustworthiness in our dealings, especially when it comes to peace treaties and agreements with our enemies. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The key words in this Hadith are (sulhan) "صُلْحاً" meaning truce or peace treaty, (dhimmah) "ذِمَّةً" meaning pledge or covenant, and (amanah) "أمانةِ" meaning trust or fidelity. These words highlight the significance of fulfilling our obligations and honoring our promises, particularly in the context of resolving conflicts and establishing peaceful relations.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of fulfilling one's covenants and maintaining trustworthiness. In Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.

This verse serves as a general reminder to Muslims to honor their commitments, whether they are agreements with friends, family, or even enemies.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:72), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs the believers,

Indeed, those who believed and emigrated and fought with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided - they are allies of one another. But those who believed and did not emigrate - for you there is no guardianship of them until they emigrate. And if they seek help of you for the religion, then you must help, except against a people between yourselves and whom is a treaty. And Allah is Seeing of what you do.

This verse highlights the importance of honoring treaties, even with those who may be considered enemies. It reminds us that fulfilling our obligations and maintaining trust is essential, even in the midst of conflicts. By upholding our commitments, we demonstrate our integrity and strengthen the bonds of peace and cooperation.

Imam Ali's advice in this Hadith urges us to go beyond merely fulfilling our obligations. He encourages us to guard our pledges with trust and make our souls a shield between ourselves and that which we have pledged. This means that we should not only fulfill our commitments outwardly but also internalize the values of loyalty and trustworthiness.

By making our souls a shield, we protect ourselves from any temptations or doubts that may arise in fulfilling our obligations. We prioritize our commitment over personal gain or convenience, and we remain steadfast in our loyalty and trustworthiness.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) exemplified these qualities throughout his life. His unwavering commitment to justice, truth, and the well-being of the Muslim community serves as an inspiration for us all. His knowledge and wisdom were unparalleled, and he understood the importance of upholding one's word and maintaining trust in all aspects of life.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the significance of fulfilling our commitments and maintaining trustworthiness, especially in the context of peace treaties and agreements. It calls upon us to not only honor our obligations outwardly but also internalize the values of loyalty and trust. By doing so, we strengthen the bonds of peace and cooperation, and we uphold the teachings of the Quran and the noble example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be true to our word and fulfill our obligations with sincerity and integrity.
