Hadith #8037

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "ضادُّوا الغَباوَةَ بِالفِطْنَةِ۔" This is translated as

Counter imbecility with astuteness.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound statement in light of the Quran.

The word (daddu) "ضادُّوا" in the Hadith means to counter or oppose. It implies the need to confront and challenge ignorance and foolishness. The word (al-ghabaawah) "الغَباوَةَ" refers to imbecility or ignorance. It signifies a state of lacking knowledge, understanding, or wisdom. On the other hand, (al-fitnah) "الفِطْنَةِ" means astuteness or intelligence. It represents the ability to think critically, make wise decisions, and discern between right and wrong.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of knowledge and wisdom. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who are ignorant. It emphasizes the superiority of knowledge and the need to counter ignorance with wisdom.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah advises the believers to verify information before accepting it. Allah says,

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse encourages Muslims to be cautious and discerning, to not blindly accept information without verifying its authenticity. It emphasizes the importance of astuteness in dealing with false or misleading claims.
