— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for all Muslims to abstain from oppression and injustice. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and knowledge, advises us to stay away from acts of oppression, as they not only lead to our own downfall but also bring about regret and sorrow.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (baghiya) "بَغْيَ" refers to oppression, transgression, or going beyond the limits set by Allah. It encompasses any act that violates the rights of others, whether it be physical, emotional, or financial. The word (sara'ah) "صَرْعَةَ" refers to a sudden downfall or collapse, indicating the swift and inevitable consequences that follow acts of oppression.

To further comprehend the significance of avoiding oppression, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-An'am (6:152),

And do not approach the orphan's property except in a way that is best until he reaches maturity. And give full measure and weight in justice. We do not charge any soul except [with that within] its capacity. And when you testify, be just, even if [it concerns] a near relative. And the covenant of Allah fulfill. This has He instructed you that you may remember.

This ayah emphasizes the importance of justice and fairness in dealing with others, including orphans. It highlights the need to act with integrity and avoid any form of oppression. By adhering to these principles, we not only fulfill our obligations towards others but also protect ourselves from the negative consequences that arise from oppressive behavior.

Another verse that sheds light on the consequences of oppression is found in Surah Al-Ghashiyah (88:26), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

Then it is Our job to call them to account.

This verse serves as a reminder that Allah is the ultimate judge, and He will hold us accountable for our actions, especially those involving oppression. The consequences of oppression may not be immediate, but rest assured that Allah's justice will prevail.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith is not only a warning about the consequences of oppression but also a call to reflect on our actions. When we oppress others, we not only harm them but also tarnish our own souls. The tears of regret and sorrow mentioned in the Hadith symbolize the remorse that engulfs the oppressor when they realize the magnitude of their actions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to be mindful of our behavior and to strive for justice and fairness in all aspects of our lives. By doing so, we not only protect ourselves from the negative consequences of oppression but also contribute to a just and harmonious society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to abstain from oppression. It warns us of the swift downfall and the tears of regret that accompany acts of oppression. By reflecting on the guidance provided in the Quran and heeding the advice of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can strive to be just and fair in all our dealings, thereby safeguarding ourselves from the negative consequences of oppression and ensuring a better future for ourselves and our communities. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and protect us from oppression.
