رُبَّما أدْرَكَ الظَّنُّ بِالصَّوابِ۔
It is possible that conjecture may [turn out to] be correct.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Doubt And Misgiving)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
رُبَّما أدْرَكَ الظَّنُّ بِالصَّوابِ۔
which translates to
It is possible that conjecture may [turn out to] be correct.
This statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the potential validity of an assumption or conjecture, despite its uncertain nature.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6),
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information before accepting it as truth. It cautions against blindly following assumptions or rumors without proper investigation.
Similarly, in Surah Al-Isra (17:36), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse encourages Muslims to refrain from making judgments or forming opinions based on mere conjecture or assumptions. It reminds us that we will be held accountable for our actions, including the words we speak and the beliefs we hold.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement acknowledges the possibility that an assumption or conjecture may turn out to be correct. However, it is crucial to note that this does not negate the importance of seeking knowledge and verifying information. The Hadith serves as a reminder that while conjecture may occasionally align with reality, it is still essential to approach it with caution and subject it to scrutiny.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his profound knowledge and wisdom. His statement highlights the importance of critical thinking and the need to base our beliefs and actions on sound evidence. It encourages Muslims to seek knowledge, question assumptions, and verify information before accepting it as truth.
By reflecting on this Hadith and the accompanying Quranic verses, Muslims are reminded of the importance of intellectual integrity and the pursuit of knowledge. It urges us to be cautious in accepting information without proper investigation and to strive for a deeper understanding of the truth.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,
It is possible that conjecture may [turn out to] be correct,
serves as a reminder to approach assumptions and conjectures with caution. It encourages Muslims to seek knowledge, verify information, and base their beliefs and actions on sound evidence. By doing so, we can strive for a deeper understanding of the truth and avoid the pitfalls of blind acceptance or hasty judgment. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all in our pursuit of knowledge and grant us the wisdom to discern between truth and falsehood.
