وَاعَجَبَاهُ! أَتَكُونُ الْخِلاَفَةَ بِالصَّحَابَةِ وَلاَتَكُونُ بِالصَّحَابةِ وَالْقَرَابَةِ؟۔

How strange? Could the caliphate be through the (Prophet's) companionship but not through (his) companionship and (his) kinship?.

How strange? Could the caliphate be through the (Prophet's) companionship...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #190)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) expresses his astonishment and bewilderment at the idea that the caliphate, the leadership of the Muslim community, could be based solely on companionship and not take into account the importance of kinship with the Prophet ().

Let us delve into the important words in this hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (caliphate) "خِلاَفَةَ" refers to the position of leadership and authority in the Muslim community. (companionship) "الصَّحَابَةِ" refers to the companions of the Prophet (), who were blessed to be in his presence, learn from him, and support him during his lifetime. (kinship) "الْقَرَابَةِ" refers to the close family ties and blood relations with the Prophet (), particularly referring to Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) as his cousin and son-in-law.

To understand the significance of this hadith, we must turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of both companionship and kinship in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:72), Allah says,

Indeed, those who have believed and emigrated and fought with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided - they are allies of one another.

This verse highlights the importance of companionship and unity among the believers.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah says,

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse emphasizes the need for divine support and guidance, which can be attained through a strong connection with Allah and His chosen representatives.

Now, let us reflect on the impactful message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his exceptional knowledge, wisdom, and understanding of the teachings of Islam. He recognized the importance of both companionship and kinship in the caliphate, as they are complementary and interconnected.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) understood that the companionship of the Prophet () was a unique privilege and a testament to the faith and dedication of those who were blessed to be in his presence. However, he also recognized the significance of kinship, particularly his own relationship with the Prophet (), as it represented a deep bond of love, trust, and spiritual connection.

By expressing his astonishment, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to leadership that takes into account both companionship and kinship. He reminds the Muslims of the importance of recognizing and honoring the close family ties of the Prophet () and the unique qualities and knowledge possessed by individuals such as himself.

The consequences of neglecting kinship in the caliphate can be seen throughout history, as divisions and conflicts have arisen due to the disregard for the rightful successors of the Prophet () from his family. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) foresaw the potential consequences of excluding kinship from the leadership of the Muslim community and sought to remind the Muslims of the importance of upholding the rights of the Prophet's () family.

In conclusion, this hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to recognize and honor both companionship and kinship in the caliphate. It highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to leadership that takes into account the unique qualities, knowledge, and spiritual connection of the Prophet's () family. By reflecting on this hadith and its implications, Muslims can strive for unity, justice, and righteousness in their communities, while upholding the rights of the Prophet's () family and following the teachings of Islam. May Allah guide us all on the straight path and grant us the wisdom to understand and implement the teachings of the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
