اَلحاسِدُ يَفْرَحُ بِالشُّرُورِ، ويَغْتَمُّ بِالسُّرُورِ۔
The jealous one is happy with disaster [befalling others] and saddened by [their] happiness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Jealous)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The jealous one is happy with disaster [befalling others] and saddened by [their] happiness.
This enlightening Hadith highlights the destructive nature of jealousy and its negative impact on individuals and society.
The word "al-hasid" in Arabic refers to a person who harbors jealousy and envy towards others. Jealousy is an emotion that arises when one desires what another person possesses, whether it be material possessions, talents, or blessings. This feeling of envy can lead to harmful actions and ill-wishing towards others.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement sheds light on the inner workings of a jealous person's mindset. Such an individual finds pleasure in the misfortunes and hardships faced by others. This is a reflection of their own discontentment and bitterness. On the other hand, they feel saddened by the happiness and success of others, as it serves as a reminder of their own perceived inadequacies.
To understand the gravity of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Falaq (Chapter 113), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us against the evil of jealousy and envy. He says, (Quran 113:5)
And from the evil of an envier when he envies
This verse emphasizes the harmful consequences of harboring jealousy in one's heart.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (Chapter 49), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us to avoid suspicion and envy towards one another. He says, (Quran 49:12)
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful
These verses from the Quran highlight the detrimental effects of jealousy and envy on both an individual and a community. Jealousy breeds negativity, erodes trust, and creates divisions among people. It is a destructive emotion that hinders personal growth and prevents individuals from appreciating the blessings bestowed upon them.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate gratitude and contentment in their hearts. Instead of being envious of others, we should focus on our own personal development and strive to improve ourselves. Jealousy only leads to bitterness and unhappiness, while contentment brings peace and tranquility.
Moreover, this Hadith encourages Muslims to support and rejoice in the success and happiness of others. Islam teaches us to be compassionate and empathetic towards our fellow human beings. When we genuinely celebrate the achievements and joys of others, we contribute to a harmonious and cohesive society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the destructive nature of jealousy. It urges Muslims to strive for contentment, gratitude, and empathy towards others. By avoiding jealousy and embracing positive emotions, we can foster a society that is united, compassionate, and filled with blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May we all strive to overcome jealousy and cultivate a heart that is free from envy.
