— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الأعمال بالخبرة" which translates to

Actions are [carried out] through know-how.

This concise statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims.

Let us first delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. "الأعمال" refers to actions or deeds, encompassing all aspects of human conduct. "بالخبرة" can be translated as "through know-how" or "with knowledge." It signifies the importance of having knowledge and understanding in order to perform actions effectively and with excellence.

The Quran emphasizes the significance of knowledge in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who lack it. Similarly, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.

This verse emphasizes that knowledge is a means of elevation and distinction in the sight of Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith aligns with these Quranic teachings, emphasizing the importance of knowledge in our actions. It reminds us that simply performing actions without knowledge can lead to shortcomings and deficiencies. Knowledge equips us with the necessary understanding, skills, and insights to carry out our actions in the best possible manner.

To illustrate this, let us consider the example of prayer. Performing the physical movements of prayer without understanding its significance, reciting the Quranic verses without comprehending their meanings, and lacking awareness of the etiquettes and spiritual dimensions of prayer would diminish the quality and impact of our worship. However, when we acquire knowledge about the various aspects of prayer, its inner dimensions, and the proper way to perform it, our actions become more meaningful, sincere, and transformative.

Furthermore, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith also highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and constantly improving ourselves. It encourages us to strive for excellence in our actions by continuously increasing our knowledge and understanding. By doing so, we can enhance the quality of our deeds and fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims more effectively.

Moreover, this Hadith serves as a reminder that knowledge is not limited to religious matters alone. It encompasses all aspects of life, including our personal, social, and professional endeavors. By seeking knowledge and applying it in our actions, we can excel in various fields and contribute positively to society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that actions are carried out through know-how. It emphasizes the importance of knowledge in our actions and encourages us to seek knowledge in order to perform our deeds with excellence. By acquiring knowledge and understanding, we can enhance the quality and impact of our actions, both in our religious worship and in all other aspects of life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and apply it in our actions.
