(Ghurar al-Hikam: Getting Connected To Allah)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لَنْ تَتَّصِلَ بِالخالِقِ حَتّى تَنْقَطِعَ عَنِ الخَلْقِ۔

This powerful statement emphasizes the importance of severing our ties with the creation in order to truly connect with the Creator.

Let us delve into the meanings of some important words in this Hadith. The word (tatasil) "تَتَّصِلَ" means to establish a connection or bond, while (bil-khaliq) "بِالخالِقِ" refers to the Creator, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). On the other hand, (tanqatia) "تَنْقَطِعَ" means to sever or cut off, and (‘anil-khalq) "عَنِ الخَلْقِ" refers to the creation.

To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am (6:162),

Say, 'Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.'

This verse highlights the importance of directing all our acts of worship and devotion solely towards Allah, the Creator. By severing our ties with the creation, we detach ourselves from any distractions or attachments that may hinder our connection with Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:165), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.

This verse warns against associating partners with Allah and emphasizes the need to prioritize our love and devotion solely for Him. By severing our ties with the creation, we detach ourselves from any false idols or distractions that may divert our love and devotion away from Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their relationship with Allah above all else. It urges us to detach ourselves from worldly attachments and distractions, such as material possessions, desires, and unhealthy relationships. By doing so, we create space in our hearts and minds to focus solely on our connection with the Creator.

Severing ties with the creation does not mean isolating ourselves from society or neglecting our responsibilities towards others. Islam encourages us to maintain healthy relationships and fulfill our obligations towards family, friends, and the wider community. However, it reminds us to prioritize our relationship with Allah and ensure that our actions and intentions are guided by His pleasure.

When we sever our ties with the creation, we free ourselves from the shackles of worldly attachments and distractions. This detachment allows us to develop a deeper understanding of our purpose in life and strengthens our connection with Allah. It enables us to seek His guidance, rely on His support, and strive for His pleasure in all aspects of our lives.

The consequences of severing our ties with the creation and prioritizing our connection with the Creator are profound. We become more mindful of our actions, seeking to align them with the teachings of Islam. We become more conscious of our intentions, ensuring they are sincere and solely for the sake of Allah. We become more aware of the transient nature of this world, focusing on the eternal rewards of the Hereafter.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of constantly evaluating our relationships and attachments. We should strive to detach ourselves from anything that hinders our spiritual growth and distracts us from our ultimate purpose. By severing our ties with the creation and connecting with the Creator, we can attain true peace, contentment, and fulfillment in this life and the Hereafter.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to sever our ties with the creation and deepen our connection with Him. May He guide us to prioritize our relationship with Him above all else and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
