(Ghurar al-Hikam: Education And Learning)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالتَّعَلُّمِ يُنالُ العِلْمُ۔" This can be translated into English as,

Through education, knowledge is gained.

This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and the path to acquiring it.

Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith. The word (ta'allum) "تَعَلُّمِ" refers to the act of learning or acquiring knowledge. It signifies the active pursuit of knowledge through various means, such as studying, reflecting, and seeking guidance from knowledgeable individuals. The word (ilm) "عِلْمُ" refers to knowledge, which encompasses both theoretical and practical understanding.

The significance of seeking knowledge is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who are ignorant. It emphasizes that knowledge is a means of attaining superiority and understanding the world around us.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.

This verse highlights that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is through knowledge that individuals are raised in their ranks and rewarded.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the active pursuit of knowledge as the means to acquire it. It implies that knowledge is not something that can be passively obtained or bestowed upon an individual without effort. Rather, it requires dedication, effort, and a sincere desire to learn.

When we reflect on the consequences of seeking knowledge, we realize its transformative power. Knowledge broadens our horizons, enables us to make informed decisions, and empowers us to contribute positively to society. It allows us to distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood, and guides us towards the path of righteousness.

Moreover, seeking knowledge is not limited to religious matters alone. It encompasses all fields of study, including science, arts, literature, and more. Islam encourages Muslims to seek knowledge in all areas, as long as it aligns with the principles of the religion.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on education and knowledge is a testament to his own profound wisdom and knowledge. He was known for his unparalleled intellect and understanding, which earned him the title of (the Gate of Knowledge) "Bab al-'Ilm". His teachings and insights continue to inspire Muslims to this day.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of seeking knowledge as the means to acquire it. It emphasizes the active pursuit of knowledge through education, study, and reflection. This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasize the significance of knowledge and its transformative power. As Muslims, we should strive to embody the spirit of this Hadith by seeking knowledge, both religious and worldly, and utilizing it for the betterment of ourselves and society as a whole.
