أَوْلَى النّاسِ بِالاِصْطِناعِ، مَنْ إذا مُطِلَ صَبَرَ، وإذا مُنِعَ عَذَرَ، وإذا أُعْطِيَ شَكَرَ۔
The most worthy of favour among the people is one who is patient when he is put off, excuses when he is denied and shows gratitude when he is given.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the qualities of a person who is truly deserving of Allah's favor. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its deeper meanings in light of the Quran.
The first important word in this Hadith is (istinaa) "اِصْطِناعِ". It refers to receiving favor or kindness from someone. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the most deserving of this favor is the one who possesses three qualities: patience, excuses, and gratitude.
The first quality mentioned is patience, which is described as (sabr) "صَبَرَ". Patience is the ability to remain steadfast and composed in the face of adversity, delays, or disappointments. Allah, in the Quran, repeatedly emphasizes the importance of patience and promises great rewards for those who possess this virtue. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153), Allah says,
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
The second quality mentioned is making excuses when denied or rejected, which is described as (udhr) "عَذَرَ". This refers to the act of offering valid reasons or justifications when one's request or desire is not fulfilled. Making excuses demonstrates humility, understanding, and a willingness to accept the decisions of others. In Surah An-Nur (24:61), Allah commands the believers to accept excuses and forgive, saying,
And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy... and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
The third quality mentioned is gratitude, which is described as (shukr) "شَكَرَ". Gratitude is the act of acknowledging and appreciating the blessings and favors bestowed upon us by Allah. It is an expression of humility and recognition of Allah's infinite mercy. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of gratitude, and Allah promises to increase His blessings upon those who are grateful. In Surah Ibrahim (14:7), Allah says,
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the one who possesses these qualities is truly deserving of Allah's favor. Such a person is patient in times of difficulty, understanding and accepting when their requests are denied, and grateful for the blessings bestowed upon them. These qualities reflect a deep sense of faith, trust in Allah's decree, and a humble attitude towards others.
By practicing patience, excuses, and gratitude, we can cultivate a positive mindset and strengthen our relationship with Allah. Patience helps us endure hardships and tests, excuses foster understanding and forgiveness in our relationships, and gratitude allows us to recognize and appreciate the countless blessings in our lives.
Moreover, these qualities have far-reaching consequences in our personal and social lives. Patience helps us maintain inner peace and prevents us from reacting impulsively or negatively. Making excuses promotes harmony and understanding in our interactions with others, fostering a compassionate and forgiving society. Gratitude, on the other hand, leads to contentment, humility, and a sense of fulfillment.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of embodying these qualities in our daily lives as Muslims. We should strive to be patient in the face of challenges, understanding when our desires are not fulfilled, and grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us. By doing so, we can become individuals who are truly deserving of Allah's favor and blessings.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these qualities and earn His favor. May He bless us with patience, understanding, and gratitude in all aspects of our lives. Ameen.
