(Ghurar al-Hikam: Faith)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالإيمانِ تَكُونُ النَّجاةُ۔" This can be translated as,

It is through faith that salvation is attained.

This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the pivotal role of faith in attaining salvation.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (Iman) "إيمان" refers to faith, belief, and conviction. It encompasses both the belief in the heart and the actions that emanate from it. It is a comprehensive concept that encompasses the belief in Allah, His Prophets, the Day of Judgment, and all the articles of faith.

The word (najah) "نَجَاة" means salvation or deliverance. It refers to being saved from harm, calamity, and ultimately, the eternal punishment in the Hereafter. It is the attainment of eternal bliss and success in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To further understand the significance of faith in attaining salvation, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 18:107)

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - they will have the Gardens of Paradise as a lodging

This verse highlights the inseparable connection between faith and righteous actions. It is through faith that one is motivated to perform righteous deeds, which ultimately leads to salvation.

Another verse that emphasizes the importance of faith is found in Surah Al-Asr, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 103:1-3)

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience

This verse highlights the essential components of faith, righteous actions, and the importance of enjoining good and forbidding evil. These are all integral aspects of attaining salvation.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that faith is not merely a passive belief, but an active force that drives us towards righteousness and salvation. It is through faith that we find the motivation to perform good deeds, seek knowledge, and strive for excellence in all aspects of our lives.

Faith serves as a guiding light in our journey towards salvation. It provides us with the moral compass to navigate the challenges of life and make choices that are pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It gives us the strength to resist temptations and overcome obstacles that may hinder our spiritual growth.

Furthermore, faith instills in us a sense of accountability and responsibility. It reminds us that our actions have consequences, both in this world and the Hereafter. It encourages us to reflect upon our deeds and seek forgiveness for our shortcomings, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat, (Quran 2:222)

Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the central role of faith in attaining salvation. It reminds us that true faith is not limited to mere words, but is manifested through righteous actions and a sincere commitment to seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to strengthen our faith and strive for salvation.
