بِالأدبِ تُشْحَذُ الفِطَنُ۔
Through good etiquette brainpower is sharpened.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Etiquette)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Through good etiquette brainpower is sharpened.
This amazing Hadith emphasizes the importance of good manners and etiquette in enhancing one's intellectual abilities and cognitive faculties.
The word (adab) "أدب" in this Hadith refers to good manners, etiquette, and proper behavior. It encompasses a wide range of virtues such as respect, humility, kindness, patience, and sincerity. Adab is not limited to mere external actions but also includes the internal disposition of the heart, reflecting one's character and moral values.
To understand the significance of good etiquette in sharpening one's intellect, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of adab and its positive impact on individuals and society as a whole.
In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah says,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of refraining from mocking or belittling others. It teaches us to treat every individual with respect and dignity, regardless of their background or status. By adhering to this principle of adab, we not only foster a harmonious and inclusive society but also cultivate a mindset of empathy and understanding. This, in turn, enhances our intellectual capacity as we learn to appreciate diverse perspectives and engage in meaningful dialogue.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah says,
And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.
This verse reminds us to choose our words wisely and speak in the best possible manner. It encourages us to engage in constructive and positive communication, avoiding any form of slander, backbiting, or hurtful speech. By practicing good etiquette in our speech, we not only maintain healthy relationships but also create an environment conducive to intellectual growth and mutual respect.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the profound connection between good manners and intellectual development. When we embody the values of adab, we cultivate a mindset of humility, open-mindedness, and continuous learning. Good etiquette enables us to engage in meaningful discussions, listen attentively to others' perspectives, and critically analyze information. It allows us to approach knowledge with respect and reverence, seeking wisdom rather than simply accumulating facts.
Moreover, good etiquette fosters a positive and conducive environment for intellectual pursuits. When individuals treat each other with kindness and respect, they create a safe space for sharing ideas, asking questions, and engaging in intellectual debates. This encourages intellectual growth, as individuals feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and ideas without fear of judgment or ridicule.
Conversely, a lack of adab can hinder intellectual development. When individuals engage in disrespectful behavior, such as arrogance, rudeness, or belittling others, it creates a toxic environment that stifles intellectual growth. Such behavior closes the doors of knowledge and prevents individuals from benefiting from the wisdom and insights of others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the profound impact of good etiquette on intellectual development. By embodying the values of adab, we sharpen our brainpower and create an environment conducive to intellectual growth. Let us strive to cultivate good manners and treat others with respect and kindness, for it is through these actions that we enhance our cognitive abilities and contribute to the betterment of society as a whole. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to embody the virtues of adab in our daily lives.
