Verily keeping ties with near relatives is from the obligatory acts of Islam, and Allah, the Glorified, has commanded that they should be honoured, and He, the Most High, keeps ties with the one who keeps ties with them and cuts off ties with the one who cuts off ties with them and honours the one who honours them.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Near Relatives And Keeping Or Cutting Off Ties With Them)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining strong family ties, as it is one of the obligatory acts of Islam. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has commanded us to honor our relatives, and He Himself maintains ties with those who do so. Conversely, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) cuts off ties with those who sever their family connections and honors those who honor their relatives.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some important words. (silat al-arham) "صِلَةَ الأرْحامِ" refers to maintaining ties with one's relatives. It encompasses not only blood relations but also the bonds formed through marriage and adoption. It involves showing kindness, love, and support to our family members, regardless of their actions or circumstances.

The command to maintain family ties is not unique to this Hadith; it is also emphasized in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nisa (4:1),

And fear Allah through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed, Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.

This verse highlights the importance of fearing Allah and maintaining family ties, as both are interconnected. By keeping ties with our relatives, we are fulfilling a command of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and demonstrating our piety.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:23-24), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.'

These verses emphasize the importance of honoring and respecting our parents, who are our closest relatives. By extension, this also applies to other family members, as they hold a significant place in our lives.

The consequences of maintaining family ties are profound. When we fulfill this obligation, we not only strengthen the bonds within our families but also contribute to the overall well-being of society. Strong family ties promote love, unity, and support, creating a harmonious environment for personal growth and development. It fosters a sense of belonging and security, which is essential for the emotional and psychological well-being of individuals.

On the other hand, severing family ties has detrimental effects on both individuals and society. It leads to division, animosity, and a breakdown of trust within families. It creates a sense of isolation and loneliness, causing emotional and psychological distress. Moreover, cutting off ties with relatives goes against the teachings of Islam, which emphasize the importance of unity, compassion, and forgiveness.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the exemplary character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Known for his deep knowledge and wisdom, he not only taught the importance of maintaining family ties but also exemplified it in his own life. Despite facing numerous challenges and conflicts, he maintained strong relationships with his relatives, including his enemies. His actions serve as a powerful motivation for us to follow in his footsteps and strive to uphold the command of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in our own lives.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of maintaining family ties as an obligatory act of Islam. It reminds us of Allah's command to honor our relatives and the consequences of our actions in this regard. By keeping ties with our family members, we not only fulfill a religious obligation but also contribute to the well-being of society. Conversely, severing family ties goes against the teachings of Islam and has negative consequences. Let us strive to emulate the noble character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strengthen the bonds within our families, for the sake of Allah and for the betterment of our own lives and society as a whole.
