Hadith #7264

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

One whose intellect is not complete, his evils are not safeguarded against.

This wise utterance highlights the importance of having a sound and complete intellect in order to protect oneself from falling into sinful and harmful actions.

Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (aqluhu) "عَقْلُهُ" refers to one's intellect or reasoning ability. It encompasses the capacity to think, understand, and make rational decisions. The word (bawa'iquhu) "بَوَائِقُهُ" refers to one's evils or vices. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 22, Allah states,

Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.

This verse emphasizes the importance of utilizing one's intellect and reasoning abilities to distinguish between right and wrong, good and evil.

Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The Imam is reminding us that a complete and sound intellect serves as a safeguard against falling into sinful and harmful actions. When our intellect is sound, we are able to discern between right and wrong, make wise decisions, and avoid the pitfalls of our desires and temptations.

For example, a person with a complete intellect will be able to resist the temptation of engaging in dishonest business practices, knowing that it is morally wrong and harmful to others. They will refrain from spreading false rumors or engaging in backbiting, understanding the negative consequences it can have on individuals and communities. They will also be able to resist the allure of materialistic pursuits, recognizing that true happiness lies in spiritual fulfillment and the pursuit of virtuous deeds.

On the other hand, a person whose intellect is incomplete or impaired may easily fall into the traps of their own desires and temptations. They may engage in dishonesty, deceit, and harmful actions without fully comprehending the consequences of their actions. Their lack of understanding and reasoning can lead them down a path of self-destruction and spiritual decay.

Therefore, it is incumbent upon us as Muslims to strive for the development and enhancement of our intellects. We should seek knowledge, reflect upon the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and surround ourselves with righteous individuals who can help nurture our intellects.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate and strengthen their intellects.
