What is the matter with you? You are delighted with the little of this world that you obtain while you are not saddened by the abundance of the Hereafter that you are deprived of?!

What is the matter with you? You are delighted with the little of this...

(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he questions the mindset of the people who find joy and delight in the fleeting pleasures of this world, while remaining indifferent to the immense rewards and blessings that await them in the Hereafter. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) draws attention to the paradoxical nature of this behavior and urges Muslims to reflect upon their priorities and the consequences of their choices.

Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (tafrahoon) "تَفْرَحُونَ" means to rejoice or find delight, while (al-yaseer min ad-dunya) "اليَسيرِ مِنَ الدُّنيا" refers to the little of this world. On the other hand, (la yahzunukumu) "لايَحْزنُكُمُ" means not to be saddened, and (al-katheer min al-akhirah) "الكَثيرُ مِنَ الآخِرَةِ" refers to the abundance of the Hereafter.

To comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we must turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 60:

And whatever thing you [people] have been given - it is [only for] the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment. And what is with Allah is better and more lasting; so will you not use reason?

This verse emphasizes the temporary nature of worldly possessions and urges Muslims to prioritize the eternal rewards of the Hereafter.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 46, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse highlights the transitory nature of wealth and material possessions, emphasizing the importance of focusing on good deeds that will bring everlasting rewards.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) exhortation in this Hadith serves as a wake-up call for Muslims to reflect upon their priorities and the consequences of their choices. It is natural for human beings to seek happiness and pleasure, but it is crucial to recognize that true and lasting happiness lies in the Hereafter, not in the temporary pleasures of this world.

When individuals become engrossed in the pursuit of worldly desires and neglect their spiritual growth and connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), they risk losing sight of the ultimate purpose of their existence. By prioritizing the Hereafter, Muslims can ensure that their actions align with the teachings of Islam and their ultimate goal of attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) words serve as a reminder that the choices we make in this world have consequences that extend beyond our earthly existence. Neglecting the Hereafter in favor of temporary worldly pleasures can lead to regret and deprivation in the eternal life to come. Conversely, prioritizing the Hereafter and striving for righteous deeds can lead to everlasting joy and fulfillment.

Muslims must strive to strike a balance between their worldly responsibilities and their spiritual obligations. While it is permissible to enjoy the blessings of this world, it is essential to maintain a perspective that recognizes the temporary nature of these pleasures. By constantly reminding ourselves of the abundance and everlasting nature of the Hereafter, we can remain focused on our ultimate goal and make choices that align with our faith.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize the Hereafter over the fleeting pleasures of this world. By reflecting upon the consequences of our choices and aligning our actions with the teachings of the Quran, we can strive for eternal happiness and fulfillment. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to make choices that lead to success in this world and the Hereafter.
