اِمْنَعْ نَفْسَكَ مِنَ الشَّهَواتِ تَسْلَمْ مِنَ الآفاتِ۔
Restrain your soul from lustful desires and you will remain safe from calamities.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and blessings upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) presents profound wisdom in its concise form. The word (imna') "اِمْنَعْ" means to restrain or prevent, indicating an active effort to control or withhold. (nafsak) "نَفْسَكَ" refers to the self or soul, which in Islamic thought is often seen as the seat of desires and inclinations. (al-shahawat) "الشَّهَواتِ" translates to lustful desires or cravings, encompassing not only physical desires but any form of excessive longing that may lead one astray. Finally, (taslam) "تَسْلَمْ" means to remain safe or secure, and (al-afat) "الآفاتِ" refers to calamities or afflictions.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of self-control and discipline over one's desires to avoid the pitfalls and calamities that unchecked desires can bring. The Quran provides guidance on this matter in several verses. In Surah Al-Furqan, verse 43, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) asks,
Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? Then would you be responsible for him?
This verse highlights the danger of allowing one's desires to become a guiding force, equating it to idolatry, which leads to spiritual and moral ruin.
Furthermore, Surah Al-Nazi'at, verse 40-41 states,
But as for he who feared the standing before his Lord and restrained the soul from [his] desire, then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.
Here, the Quran promises a reward for those who exercise restraint over their desires, linking self-discipline directly to spiritual success and eternal safety.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his deep knowledge and understanding of human nature, teaches that the root of many personal and societal calamities is the unchecked pursuit of desires. When individuals give in to every whim and craving, they often find themselves in situations that lead to moral, social, and even physical harm. For example, succumbing to greed can lead to corruption, while unchecked anger can result in violence. These are the calamities Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns against.
The motivation behind this teaching is to cultivate a society where individuals are guided by wisdom and righteousness rather than base desires. This self-restraint leads to personal peace and societal harmony, as individuals who control their desires are less likely to engage in harmful actions that affect themselves and others.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are encouraged to evaluate their desires and the potential consequences of acting upon them. By aligning one's actions with divine guidance and exercising restraint, they can avoid the pitfalls of excessive indulgence and live a life that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This Hadith serves as a reminder that true safety and peace come from within, through the mastery of one's desires and the pursuit of a balanced and righteous life.
