اِعْتَزِمْ (اِعْتَرِمْ) بِالشِدَّةِ حينَ لايُغْني عَنْكَ إلاَّ الشِدَّةُ۔
Be intent on [braving] difficulty when nothing will free you except difficulty.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Difficulties)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
اِعْتَزِمْ (اِعْتَرِمْ) بِالشِدَّةِ حينَ لايُغْني عَنْكَ إلاَّ الشِدَّةُ۔
This Hadith is a amazing Hadith that encourages believers to face and confront difficulties head-on, especially when there is no other option but to endure hardship.
Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. The word (i'tazim) "اِعْتَزِمْ" is derived from the root word (azm) "عزم", which means determination or resolve. It implies having a strong will and firm intention to face challenges. The word (i'tarim) "اِعْتَرِمْ" is another form of the same root word, which emphasizes the act of braving or enduring difficulty.
The term (ash-shiddah) "الشِدَّةِ" refers to hardship or adversity. It represents the trials and tribulations that one may encounter in life. This could include physical, emotional, or spiritual challenges that test a person's strength and resilience.
To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286, (Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear)
لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَاۚ
This verse assures us that Allah will never burden us with difficulties that are beyond our capacity to endure. Therefore, when faced with hardships, we should have faith in Allah's wisdom and trust that we have the strength to overcome them.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Inshirah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Indeed, with hardship, there is relief)
إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًاۚ
This verse reminds us that every difficulty is accompanied by ease. It signifies that after enduring hardships, there will be moments of comfort and ease. Therefore, we should face challenges with determination, knowing that they will eventually lead to better outcomes.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of embracing difficulties when there are no other alternatives. It encourages us to confront hardships head-on, rather than avoiding or running away from them. By doing so, we develop resilience, strength, and character.
When we choose to face difficulties, we demonstrate our trust in Allah's plan and our willingness to grow and learn from the challenges we encounter. It is through these trials that we develop patience, perseverance, and a deeper understanding of our own capabilities.
For example, imagine a student who is struggling with a difficult subject. Instead of giving up or avoiding the subject, the student decides to face the challenge head-on. They seek help, study diligently, and persevere through the difficulties. Eventually, they not only overcome the subject but also develop a strong work ethic and a sense of accomplishment.
Similarly, in our spiritual journey, we may encounter tests that require us to make difficult choices or endure hardships. By embracing these challenges, we strengthen our faith, deepen our connection with Allah, and develop a greater appreciation for the blessings in our lives.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the importance of facing difficulties with determination and resolve. It encourages us to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and development. By doing so, we demonstrate our trust in Allah's plan and our willingness to overcome obstacles. May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to face difficulties with grace and perseverance.
