(Ghurar al-Hikam: Gratitude And The Grateful)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

اِسْتَدِمِ الشُّكْرَ، تَدُمْ عَلَيْكَ النِّعْمَةُ۔

This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of gratitude and its connection to the continuation of blessings. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (istadim) "اِسْتَدِمِ" in Arabic means to continue or persist. It implies a consistent and continuous action. The word (ash-shukr) "الشُّكْرَ" refers to gratitude or thankfulness. It is the act of recognizing and appreciating the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It involves acknowledging the source of these blessings and expressing our gratitude towards Him.

The Hadith teaches us that by persistently practicing gratitude, the blessings upon us will continue. This concept is beautifully reflected in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This verse highlights the direct correlation between gratitude and the increase in blessings. When we express gratitude to Allah for His favors, He promises to increase those blessings. This increase can manifest in various forms, such as spiritual growth, material provisions, and overall well-being. Gratitude opens the doors to even more blessings from Allah.

Furthermore, the Hadith reminds us of the importance of maintaining a grateful attitude even during times of difficulty. It is easy to be grateful when everything is going well, but true gratitude is tested during hardships. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155),

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

During challenging times, it is essential to remain grateful for the blessings that we still have. By doing so, we demonstrate our trust in Allah's wisdom and His ability to alleviate our hardships. This gratitude becomes a means of attracting further blessings and relief from Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) wisdom in this Hadith can be seen in his own life. Despite facing numerous trials and tribulations, he remained steadfast in his gratitude towards Allah. His unwavering faith and gratitude were instrumental in his ability to overcome challenges and continue to receive divine blessings.

As Muslims, we should strive to adopt a lifestyle of gratitude. We should constantly reflect upon the countless blessings bestowed upon us by Allah and express our gratitude through our words and actions. By doing so, we not only invite more blessings into our lives but also cultivate a positive mindset and a deeper connection with our Creator.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of persistently practicing gratitude. By being grateful for the blessings we receive and maintaining this attitude even during hardships, we open the doors to an abundance of divine favors. Let us strive to be grateful Muslims, recognizing and appreciating the blessings of Allah in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be truly grateful and may He continue to shower His blessings upon us.
