(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ ذَكَرَ اللّهَ اِسْتَبْصَرَ۔

This can be translated as,

One who remembers Allah gains insight.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (dhakara) "ذَكَرَ" in Arabic means "to remember" or "to mention." It encompasses both the remembrance of Allah through verbal utterance and the remembrance of Allah through the heart and mind. The act of remembering Allah is not limited to a specific time or place; rather, it is a continuous and conscious effort to keep Allah in our thoughts and actions.

The word (istabsara) "اِسْتَبْصَرَ" is derived from the root (basara) "بَصَرَ", which means "to see" or "to perceive." It refers to gaining insight or understanding through the remembrance of Allah. When one remembers Allah sincerely, their vision becomes clear, and they are able to perceive the truth and reality of the world around them.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of remembering Allah and the benefits it brings. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:186)

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided

This verse highlights the closeness of Allah to His servants and the importance of calling upon Him. When we remember Allah, He responds to our supplications and guides us towards the right path.

Another verse that supports the Hadith of Imam Ali is found in Surah Al-Ankabut, where Allah says, (29:69)

And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good

When we remember Allah and strive to please Him, He guides us towards His ways and supports us in our endeavors. This guidance and support lead to a deeper understanding of the world and our purpose in it.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the act of remembering Allah is not merely a ritualistic practice, but a means to gain insight and understanding. When we remember Allah, our hearts and minds become enlightened, and we are able to see the truth and reality of the world around us.

By constantly remembering Allah, we develop a deeper connection with Him and strengthen our faith. This connection allows us to navigate through the challenges of life with wisdom and clarity. It helps us make better decisions, avoid sinful actions, and seek the pleasure of Allah in all aspects of our lives.

Moreover, the remembrance of Allah brings about a sense of tranquility and contentment in our hearts. It reminds us of our purpose in this world and helps us prioritize our actions accordingly. It serves as a constant reminder of our ultimate goal, which is to seek the pleasure of Allah and attain success in the Hereafter.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the profound impact that the remembrance of Allah can have on our lives. By continuously remembering Allah, we gain insight, understanding, and guidance. It is through this remembrance that our hearts and minds are enlightened, and we are able to navigate through the complexities of life with wisdom and clarity. May Allah grant us the ability to remember Him constantly and benefit from the insight it brings.
