When a believer observes, he takes lesson; and when he is quiet, he contemplates; and when he speaks, he remembers [Allah]; and when he is given, he is grateful; and when he undergoes hardship, he is patient.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Believer)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the qualities and actions of a true believer. It teaches us that a believer is always attentive and observant, constantly seeking lessons and reflections from the world around them. When a believer observes, they do not merely see, but they contemplate and derive wisdom from what they witness.

The word (itabar) "اعْتَبَرَ" in the Hadith means to take lesson or derive wisdom. It implies a deep level of understanding and reflection. This concept is beautifully echoed in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages believers to reflect upon the signs of His creation:

(Quran 3:190-191)

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], 'Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'

This verse highlights the importance of contemplating the signs of Allah's creation and recognizing the purpose behind them. It encourages believers to ponder over the intricate design of the universe and to recognize the wisdom and intention behind it.

The Hadith also mentions the believer's ability to be quiet and contemplate. The word (tafakkur) "تَفَكَّرَ" in the Hadith means to engage in deep thought and reflection. This quality is also emphasized in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) praises those who reflect upon His signs:

Furthermore, the Hadith mentions that when a believer speaks, they remember Allah. This reminds us of the importance of remembering Allah in all our conversations and interactions. The remembrance of Allah (ذَكَرَ اللَّهُ) is a fundamental aspect of a believer's life, as it keeps their hearts connected to their Creator and strengthens their faith. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the significance of remembering Allah:

(Quran 2:152)

So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.

(Quran 76:25)

And mention the name of your Lord [in prayer] morning and evening.

The Hadith also highlights the believer's gratitude when they are given blessings. Gratitude (شُكْر) is a fundamental aspect of faith, as it acknowledges that all blessings come from Allah and fosters a sense of contentment and humility. The Quran encourages believers to be grateful:

(Quran 14:7)

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

Finally, the Hadith emphasizes the believer's patience in times of hardship. Patience (صَبَرَ) is a virtue that enables believers to remain steadfast in the face of trials and tribulations. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of patience:

(Quran 2:155-156)

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, Who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.'

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) provides profound guidance for believers. It teaches us to be observant, reflective, and grateful in our daily lives. By observing, contemplating, remembering Allah, expressing gratitude, and practicing patience, we can strengthen our faith and strive to become true believers. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these qualities and may He guide us on the path of righteousness.
