— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Death)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "Al-mashību rasūlu-l-mawt." This can be translated into English as,

White hair [of old age] is a messenger of death.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in the light of the Quran.

The word "mashīb" in Arabic refers to white hair that appears on a person's head as they age. It is a natural phenomenon that occurs as a person grows older. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes it as a "rasūl," which means a messenger or an envoy. In this context, it signifies that white hair serves as a reminder or a sign of the approaching end of life.

This Hadith reminds us of the transient nature of this worldly life and the inevitability of death. It serves as a reminder that our time in this world is limited and that we should prepare for the eternal life that awaits us. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, (Quran 3:185)

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion?

The Quranic verse emphasizes the certainty of death for every soul and highlights the importance of striving for the hereafter. The white hair that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) refers to serves as a visual reminder of this reality. It is a sign that time is passing and that we are getting closer to our meeting with our Creator.

Reflecting on the Hadith, we can draw several important lessons. Firstly, it reminds us to constantly be aware of the transient nature of this world and to prioritize our actions accordingly. We should not become attached to the material possessions and fleeting pleasures of this life, but instead focus on building a strong relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and preparing for the hereafter.

Secondly, the Hadith encourages us to reflect on the aging process and the wisdom that comes with it. As we grow older and witness the changes in our physical appearance, it is a reminder to seek knowledge and wisdom. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and this Hadith serves as a reminder for us to follow in his footsteps and seek knowledge throughout our lives.

Lastly, this Hadith reminds us of the importance of gratitude. As we age and witness the appearance of white hair, we should be grateful for the blessings of a long life and the experiences that have shaped us. We should express gratitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for the opportunity to grow older and gain wisdom through the passage of time.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) regarding white hair as a messenger of death serves as a powerful reminder of the transient nature of this world and the importance of preparing for the hereafter. It encourages us to reflect on the aging process, seek knowledge, and express gratitude for the blessings of a long life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand and implement the teachings of this Hadith in our lives.
