— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Suppressing Anger)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الْكَاظِمُ مَنْ أمَاتَ أضْغَانَهُ
which translates to
The suppressor of anger is one who extirpates his grudges.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (Al-Kazim) "الْكَاظِمُ" refers to someone who suppresses or controls their anger. It signifies a person who possesses the ability to restrain their emotions and not let anger dictate their actions. This quality is highly praised in Islam, as it promotes peace, harmony, and self-discipline.
The term (Amata) "أمَاتَ" means to extinguish or eliminate. In the context of this Hadith, it refers to the act of eradicating or getting rid of one's grudges. Grudges are deep-seated feelings of resentment or ill-will towards someone, often arising from past grievances. The Hadith emphasizes the importance of letting go of these negative emotions and forgiving others.
To understand the significance of suppressing anger and eliminating grudges, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:134):
Those who suppress their anger and forgive people, Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse highlights the commendable nature of controlling anger and forgiving others. It is a quality that Allah loves and rewards. By restraining our anger and choosing forgiveness over resentment, we align ourselves with the divine will and earn His favor.
Additionally, in Surah Ash-Shura (42:40), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
The recompense for an evil is an evil like thereof; but whoever forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is with Allah.
This verse emphasizes the principle of reciprocity in dealing with harm. While it is natural to feel anger when wronged, Islam encourages us to rise above our emotions and respond with forgiveness and reconciliation. By doing so, we not only earn Allah's reward but also contribute to the betterment of society.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the importance of suppressing anger and eliminating grudges. When we suppress our anger, we prevent it from clouding our judgment and leading us to commit regrettable actions. By extirpating our grudges, we free ourselves from the burden of negative emotions and allow space for forgiveness and reconciliation.
When we suppress our anger, we display strength of character and self-control. It is a reflection of our ability to rise above petty disputes and prioritize harmony and peace. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and knowledge, exemplified this quality throughout his life. He forgave those who wronged him, even in the face of immense adversity, setting a powerful example for all Muslims.
The consequences of suppressing anger and eliminating grudges are far-reaching. On an individual level, it leads to inner peace, improved relationships, and a positive mindset. On a societal level, it fosters unity, understanding, and a culture of forgiveness. By embodying the teachings of this Hadith, we contribute to the creation of a harmonious and compassionate community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of suppressing anger and eliminating grudges. It urges us to control our emotions and respond to wrongdoing with forgiveness and reconciliation. By aligning ourselves with the Quranic teachings on this matter, we strive to become better Muslims and contribute to a more peaceful and compassionate society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to suppress our anger and the wisdom to eliminate our grudges.
