Hadith #8790

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

المُستَريحُ مِنَ النَّاسِ القانِعُ

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of contentment and satisfaction in one's life. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith.

The word (al-mustariḥu) "المُستَريحُ" refers to someone who is at ease, tranquil, and peaceful. It describes a state of inner calmness and serenity. This tranquility is not dependent on external circumstances, but rather stems from an internal state of contentment.

The word (min an-nas) "مِنَ النَّاسِ" means "among the people." It signifies that the contented person stands out among others, as they possess a unique quality of inner peace and satisfaction.

Lastly, the word (al-qāniʿu) "القانِعُ" refers to someone who is content and satisfied with what they have. They are not driven by excessive desires or greed, but rather find contentment in the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To understand the significance of contentment in Islam, we can turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286: (2:286)

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...

This verse reminds us that Allah knows our capabilities and provides us with what is best for us. Therefore, being content with what Allah has ordained for us is a sign of trust and reliance on His wisdom.

Furthermore, in Surah At-Talaq, verse 3, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says: (65:3)

And will provide for him from where he does not expect.

This verse assures us that Allah is the ultimate provider and sustainer. He can bless us with provisions from unexpected sources, and it is our duty to be content and grateful for His blessings.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of contentment in our lives. When we are content, we free ourselves from the constant pursuit of material possessions and worldly desires. This contentment allows us to focus on our spiritual growth and the development of our character.

A contented person is not swayed by the fluctuations of life. They are not easily disturbed by hardships or setbacks, as they trust in Allah's plan for them. They find solace in the remembrance of Allah and the fulfillment of their obligations towards Him and their fellow human beings.

Contentment also leads to inner peace and harmony. When we are satisfied with what we have, we avoid envy and jealousy towards others. We appreciate the blessings in our lives and are grateful for them. This attitude of gratitude fosters a sense of tranquility and happiness within us.

Moreover, contentment has a positive impact on our relationships with others. A contented person is not consumed by the desire to compete or outdo others. They are able to appreciate the successes and achievements of others without feeling threatened or envious. This fosters a sense of unity and cooperation within the community.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of contentment in our lives. It encourages us to find inner peace and tranquility by being satisfied with what Allah has provided for us.
