(Ghurar al-Hikam: Giving Examples And Using Metaphors)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

For people of understanding, speech becomes figurative.

This thought-provoking saying highlights the importance of wisdom and comprehension in interpreting and understanding the deeper meanings behind words and expressions.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (fahm) "فَهْمِ" refers to understanding, comprehension, and insight. It is the ability to grasp the true meaning and implications of something. The word (tusarrifu) "تُصَرَّفُ" means to be directed or guided. And finally, the word (aqwal) "أقْوالِ" refers to speech or words.

To support the exegesis of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:43),

And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.

This verse emphasizes that true understanding and comprehension are only attainable by those who possess knowledge. Similarly, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.

Now, let us reflect on the essence of Imam Ali's statement. The Hadith teaches us that speech, especially when it comes to matters of wisdom and deeper truths, is not always literal. It requires a level of understanding and insight to grasp the intended meanings behind the words. Just as a figurative language uses metaphors, symbols, and allegories to convey deeper messages, the same applies to the speech of those who possess wisdom and knowledge.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the fact that the true essence of words can only be comprehended by those who possess understanding. They are able to see beyond the surface level and delve into the deeper meanings and implications. This understanding allows them to navigate through the complexities of language and extract the intended messages.

For example, when the Quran mentions the concept of "light," it is not merely referring to physical illumination. It symbolizes guidance, knowledge, and enlightenment. Similarly, when the Quran speaks of "water," it represents purification, sustenance, and life-giving qualities. These deeper meanings can only be grasped by those who possess understanding and insight.

The consequences of this Hadith are profound. It reminds us of the importance of seeking knowledge and wisdom. It encourages us to develop our understanding and comprehension to truly appreciate the depth and richness of the Quranic teachings. By doing so, we can avoid misinterpretations and misunderstandings, and instead, derive the intended messages and guidance from the words of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that for people of understanding, speech becomes figurative. It emphasizes the need for knowledge and comprehension to truly grasp the deeper meanings behind words and expressions. By developing our understanding, we can navigate through the complexities of language and extract the intended messages from the Quranic teachings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be among those who possess understanding and insight.
