Hadith #1785

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May the blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "آفَةُ الجُودِ التَّبْذيرُ۔" This Hadith can be translated into English as,

The bane of generosity is wastefulness.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (jood) "جُودِ" refers to generosity, which is the act of giving and being benevolent towards others. It encompasses the willingness to share one's wealth, possessions, and resources with those in need, without expecting anything in return. Generosity is a praiseworthy quality that is highly encouraged in Islam.

On the other hand, the word (tabzeer) "تَّبْذيرُ" refers to wastefulness or extravagance. It signifies the act of spending or utilizing resources in an excessive, unnecessary, or careless manner. Wastefulness is condemned in Islam as it goes against the principles of moderation, gratitude, and responsible use of resources.

The Quran provides us with guidance on the importance of generosity and the consequences of wastefulness. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195),

And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse emphasizes the obligation of spending in the way of Allah, which includes acts of charity and helping those in need. However, it also warns against throwing oneself into destruction by refraining from spending. This indicates that while generosity is encouraged, it should be done in a balanced and responsible manner, without falling into wastefulness.

Another verse that sheds light on the concept of wastefulness is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:27), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.

This verse draws a parallel between wastefulness and the actions of Satan. It highlights that wastefulness is not only a misuse of resources but also a reflection of ingratitude towards the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah. It associates wastefulness with the characteristics of Satan, emphasizing the spiritual and moral consequences of such behavior.

Now, let us reflect on the impactful message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith.
