(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Appointed Time Of Death)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The reality of death exposes the lie of [false] aspiration.

This thought-provoking Hadith highlights the contrast between the fleeting nature of worldly desires and the eternal reality of death. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The first word we will examine is (the reality of death) "صِدقُ الأجلِ". The term "أجل" refers to the appointed time or destiny, and in this context, it signifies death. Death is an undeniable reality that every human being will face, regardless of their aspirations or desires. It is the ultimate truth that exposes the transitory nature of worldly pursuits.

The second phrase in the Hadith is (exposes the lie of [false] aspiration) "يُفْصِحُ كِذْبَ الأمَلِ". Here, the word "كِذْبَ الأمَلِ" refers to the falsehood or deception of worldly aspirations. It implies that the desires and ambitions we chase in this world are often illusory and deceptive, promising fulfillment but ultimately leaving us empty-handed.

To understand the connotation of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20),

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.

This verse emphasizes the temporary nature of worldly pursuits and highlights their ultimate insignificance in the face of death.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:60), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us,

And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse reminds us that the pleasures and aspirations of this world are merely an illusion, deceiving us into believing that they hold true value and significance.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to reflect upon the transient nature of worldly desires and the ultimate reality of death. It urges us to prioritize the pursuit of eternal rewards and the preparation for the Hereafter, rather than being consumed by the temporary allurements of this world.

When we recognize the fleeting nature of worldly aspirations, we are motivated to redirect our focus towards the pursuit of righteousness and the fulfillment of our spiritual obligations. This realization instills in us a sense of urgency to seek forgiveness, engage in acts of worship, and strive for moral excellence.

Moreover, the awareness of death's certainty and its ability to expose the falsehood of worldly aspirations encourages us to detach ourselves from materialistic pursuits. It reminds us to invest our time and energy in actions that have lasting value and significance in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to reflect upon the transient nature of worldly desires and the ultimate reality of death. It urges us to prioritize the pursuit of eternal rewards and the preparation for the Hereafter. By recognizing the deceptive nature of worldly aspirations, we are motivated to redirect our focus towards righteousness and detachment from materialistic pursuits. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand the true value of this life and the Hereafter, and may He guide us to live a life that is pleasing to Him.
