(Ghurar al-Hikam: Orphans)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

كافِلُ اليَتيمِ اَثيْرٌ عِنْدَ اللّهِ۔

This can be translated as,

One who takes charge of caring for the orphans is favored in the sight of Allah.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (kaafil) "كافِلُ" refers to someone who takes responsibility for the care and well-being of another individual. In this context, it specifically refers to someone who becomes the guardian or caretaker of an orphan. The word (al-yateem) "اليَتيمِ" refers to a child who has lost one or both parents and is in need of care and support.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of caring for orphans and highlights the immense reward and favor one receives from Allah for fulfilling this duty. To further understand the significance of this act, we can turn to the Quran for guidance.

Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 177 (Quran 2:177),

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.

This verse highlights the importance of giving to the orphans among other categories of people who are in need. By taking care of orphans, we are fulfilling a righteous act that is pleasing to Allah. It is a manifestation of true righteousness, as it demonstrates our belief in Allah, the Last Day, and the principles of faith.

Caring for orphans is not merely a financial obligation; it encompasses providing emotional support, guidance, and a nurturing environment for these vulnerable individuals. It requires selflessness, compassion, and a genuine concern for their well-being. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, has chosen to reward those who take on this noble responsibility with His favor and blessings.

In Surah Ad-Duha, verses 9-10 (Quran 93:9-10), Allah says,

And as for the orphan, do not oppress [him]. And as for the petitioner, do not repel [him].

These verses highlight the importance of treating orphans with kindness and fairness. We are instructed not to oppress or mistreat them in any way. Instead, we should embrace them with love, compassion, and support. By doing so, we not only fulfill our duty towards them but also earn the favor and pleasure of Allah.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the immense reward and favor that awaits those who take charge of caring for orphans. By fulfilling this duty, we not only provide for the physical and emotional needs of these children but also contribute to their overall well-being and development.

The consequences of neglecting the needs of orphans are severe. In Surah Al-Ma'un, verses 1-3 (Quran 107:1-3), Allah warns,

Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense? For that is the one who drives away the orphan and does not encourage the feeding of the poor.

These verses serve as a reminder of the grave consequences for those who neglect their responsibilities towards orphans. By turning a blind eye to their needs and denying them the care and support they deserve, one risks denying themselves the favor and mercy of Allah.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of taking charge of caring for orphans. It highlights the immense favor and reward one receives from Allah for fulfilling this duty. By providing for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of orphans, we not only fulfill a righteous act but also earn the favor and pleasure of Allah. Neglecting the needs of orphans, on the other hand, carries severe consequences. May Allah guide us all to fulfill our responsibilities towards orphans and grant us His favor and blessings.
