Hadith #1117

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "أَبْعَدُ شَيْءٍ الأَمَلُ" which translates to

The farthest thing is hope.

This concise statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) carries profound wisdom and insight into the human condition.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us first examine the key words used. The word (abʿadu) "أَبْعَدُ" means "farthest" or "most distant." It denotes a sense of distance or separation. The word (shay'in) "شَيْءٍ" means "thing" or "matter." And finally, the word (al-amal) "الأَمَلُ" means "hope" or "expectation."

In the context of this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the inherent limitations and potential dangers of excessive hope or unrealistic expectations. While hope is generally considered a positive and motivating force, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that it can also lead to disappointment, despair, and a neglect of practical action.

This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) finds support in the teachings of the Quran. In Surah Yusuf, verse 87, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people.

This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining hope in Allah's mercy and assistance, even in the face of difficult circumstances.

However, it is crucial to strike a balance between hope and action. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.

This verse reminds us that while we should have hope in Allah's help and guidance, we must also take practical steps to overcome challenges and fulfill our responsibilities.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that while hope is important, it should not be relied upon as the sole means of achieving success. Instead, it should be accompanied by sincere efforts, perseverance, and reliance on Allah's guidance.

Excessive hope without action can lead to complacency and a lack of motivation to strive for improvement. It can also blind individuals to the reality of their situation and prevent them from taking necessary steps to address their challenges.

On the other hand, a balanced approach to hope encourages Muslims to have faith in Allah's mercy and assistance while actively working towards their goals. This balanced approach is exemplified in the life of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself. He was known for his deep knowledge, wisdom, and unwavering faith in Allah, but he also demonstrated his commitment to action through his leadership, justice, and bravery.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith "أَبْعَدُ شَيْءٍ الأَمَلُ" serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of maintaining a balanced approach to hope. While hope is a powerful motivator, it must be accompanied by sincere efforts, practical action, and reliance on Allah's guidance. By striking this balance, Muslims can navigate the challenges of life with resilience, determination, and a firm belief in Allah's mercy and assistance.
