The consolidators of evil are obstinacy and increased quarrelsomeness.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Evil And The Wicked)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The consolidators of evil are obstinacy and increased quarrelsomeness.

This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights two key factors that contribute to the perpetuation and strengthening of evil in society.

The word "lajaj" in Arabic, translated as "obstinacy," refers to a state of stubbornness and refusal to accept or acknowledge the truth. It is a characteristic that hinders growth, understanding, and positive change. When individuals become obstinate, they close themselves off from different perspectives and fail to engage in meaningful dialogue and introspection. This rigidity of thought prevents the resolution of conflicts and the attainment of justice.

The second factor mentioned in the Hadith is "mumarat," which translates to "increased quarrelsomeness." This term signifies an escalation in disputes and conflicts. When people engage in constant arguments and disagreements, it creates an environment of hostility and division. Such an atmosphere is fertile ground for the flourishing of evil, as it weakens the bonds of unity and cooperation among individuals.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of avoiding obstinacy and quarrelsomeness in several verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 29:46)

And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, 'We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him'

This verse encourages Muslims to engage in discussions and debates with people of different faiths in a respectful and peaceful manner. It discourages unnecessary arguments and emphasizes the importance of finding common ground. By doing so, we can foster understanding and promote harmony among diverse communities.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises Muslims, (Quran 49:11)

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers

This verse highlights the importance of avoiding quarrels and insults, as they lead to the degradation of individuals and the deterioration of relationships. It reminds Muslims to treat others with respect and dignity, regardless of their differences. By adhering to these teachings, we can prevent the consolidation of evil and promote a culture of peace and understanding.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect on their own behavior and attitudes. It urges us to examine whether we are contributing to the consolidation of evil through obstinacy and quarrelsomeness or actively working towards its eradication through open-mindedness and peaceful dialogue.

By embodying the qualities of humility, patience, and empathy, we can counteract the consolidators of evil and strive towards a society that upholds justice, unity, and compassion. Let us take inspiration from the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the guidance of the Quran to purify our hearts and contribute to the betterment of our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to overcome obstinacy and quarrelsomeness and to promote peace and righteousness in all aspects of our lives.
