(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ثَمَرَةُ الْمُحاسَبَةِ صَلاحُ النَّفْسِ۔
which translates to,
The fruit of self-appraisal is reformation of the soul.
This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of self-reflection and self-evaluation in the process of spiritual growth and purification.
The word (thamaratu) "ثَمَرَةُ" in this Hadith refers to the fruit or outcome of a particular action or practice. It signifies the result or consequence that emerges as a result of engaging in a specific behavior or mindset. In this context, it refers to the positive transformation and improvement of the soul that occurs as a result of engaging in self-appraisal and introspection.
The phrase (al-muhasabah) "الْمُحاسَبَةِ" means self-appraisal or self-accountability. It involves taking a sincere and honest look at one's actions, intentions, and thoughts, and assessing them in light of the teachings of Islam. It is a process of introspection and reflection that allows individuals to identify their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
The word (salah) "صَلاحُ" means reformation or rectification. It refers to the act of improving oneself and striving towards righteousness and moral excellence. It encompasses the purification of the soul, the cultivation of virtuous qualities, and the abandonment of sinful behaviors.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the fruit of engaging in self-appraisal and introspection is the reformation of the soul. This means that when individuals sincerely reflect upon their actions, acknowledge their mistakes, and strive to rectify their behavior, they will witness a positive transformation within themselves. This transformation manifests in the form of increased self-awareness, heightened consciousness of Allah's presence, and a strengthened commitment to living a righteous and virtuous life.
The importance of self-appraisal and self-accountability is emphasized in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse encourages believers to engage in self-reflection and to assess their actions in light of the Day of Judgment. By doing so, individuals become more conscious of their deeds and are motivated to strive for righteousness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Taghabun (64:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
The Day He will assemble you for the Day of Assembly - that is the Day of Deprivation. And whoever believes in Allah and does righteousness - He will remove from him his misdeeds and admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.
This verse highlights the reward for those who engage in self-accountability and strive for righteousness. Allah promises to forgive their sins and grant them eternal bliss in Paradise.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to regularly engage in self-appraisal and introspection. By honestly assessing our actions, intentions, and thoughts, we can identify areas for improvement and work towards the reformation of our souls. This process of self-reflection leads to increased self-awareness, spiritual growth, and a stronger connection with Allah. It allows us to align our actions with the teachings of Islam and strive for righteousness in all aspects of our lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-appraisal and introspection in the journey of spiritual growth and purification. By engaging in self-reflection, Muslims can identify their weaknesses, rectify their behavior, and strive for righteousness. This process of self-accountability leads to the reformation of the soul and a closer connection with Allah. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to engage in sincere self-appraisal and may He bless us with the reformation of our souls.
