قَدْ يُعْذَرُ المُتَحَيِّرُ الْمَبْهُوتُ۔
It is possible for the one who is perplexed and bewildered to be excused.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Perplexed)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
قَدْ يُعْذَرُ المُتَحَيِّرُ الْمَبْهُوتُ۔
This can be translated as,
It is possible for the one who is perplexed and bewildered to be excused.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (mutahayyir) "مُتَحَيِّرُ" refers to someone who is confused, perplexed, or uncertain. They find themselves in a state of doubt or indecision, unsure of the correct course of action. The word (almabhoot) "الْمَبْهُوتُ" means someone who is bewildered or disoriented, lacking clarity and direction.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) tells us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286,
لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَاۚ
which means,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah is aware of our capabilities and limitations. He does not expect us to have all the answers or to be free from confusion at all times. He understands our human nature and grants us mercy and forgiveness when we find ourselves in a state of perplexity.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj, verse 78, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
which means,
And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty.
This verse emphasizes that Allah does not burden us with more than we can handle in matters of religion. He does not hold us accountable for our confusion or lack of knowledge, as long as we strive sincerely to seek the truth and fulfill our obligations.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the compassionate nature of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) towards those who are perplexed and bewildered. It serves as a reminder that Allah understands our struggles and forgives our shortcomings when we are faced with uncertainty. This Hadith encourages us to seek knowledge, guidance, and clarity in our decision-making processes, but also reassures us that we will be excused if we find ourselves in a state of confusion.
For example, imagine a Muslim who is faced with a complex ethical dilemma. They are unsure of the correct course of action and are torn between conflicting opinions. In such a situation, this Hadith reminds them that they will be excused for their confusion as long as they sincerely strive to make the right choice based on their understanding of Islam. Allah's mercy encompasses those who are genuinely seeking guidance and are troubled by the complexities of life.
This Hadith also serves as a motivation for Muslims to continuously seek knowledge and understanding. By studying the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt, we can equip ourselves with the necessary tools to navigate through the challenges and uncertainties of life. Seeking knowledge not only helps us make informed decisions, but it also strengthens our faith and deepens our connection with Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that Allah's mercy and forgiveness extend to those who are perplexed and bewildered. It encourages us to seek knowledge and understanding, while also assuring us that we will be excused for our confusion as long as we sincerely strive to make the right choices based on our understanding of Islam. May Allah guide us all on the straight path and grant us the wisdom to navigate through the complexities of life.
