— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Etiquette)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Good etiquette is one of the two distinguishing merits.

This impactful Hadith emphasizes the importance of good manners and etiquette in Islam. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word "adab" in Arabic refers to good manners, etiquette, and proper conduct. It encompasses a wide range of behaviors, including respect, kindness, humility, and patience. It is a comprehensive term that encompasses both our interactions with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and our interactions with fellow human beings.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of good manners and etiquette. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of respecting others and refraining from mockery or insults. It teaches us to treat each other with kindness and dignity, regardless of our differences. This is a manifestation of good etiquette, as it promotes harmony and unity within the Muslim community.

Another verse that emphasizes the significance of good manners is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), where Allah says,

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse encourages Muslims to choose their words wisely and speak in a manner that is pleasing and beneficial. It reminds us that our speech should be characterized by kindness, honesty, and sincerity. By doing so, we can avoid causing division and discord among ourselves.

Now, let us reflect on the thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses. The Imam highlights that good etiquette is one of the two distinguishing merits. This implies that possessing good manners is not only commendable but also sets a person apart from others.

When we exhibit good etiquette, we are embodying the teachings of Islam and following the example of the Prophet Muhammad () and his noble companions. It is through our actions and behavior that we can truly demonstrate the beauty of Islam to the world.

Good etiquette has far-reaching consequences. It fosters strong relationships, builds trust, and promotes a sense of unity among Muslims. It also enhances our worship and devotion to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), as it reflects our sincerity and humility before Him.

Furthermore, good etiquette has a positive impact on society as a whole. It encourages empathy, compassion, and understanding, leading to a more harmonious and peaceful coexistence. By treating others with respect and kindness, we contribute to the betterment of our communities and fulfill our duty as Muslims.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of good etiquette in Islam. It reminds us that possessing good manners is not only commendable but also sets us apart from others. By following the teachings of the Quran and emulating the Prophet Muhammad (), we can cultivate a culture of respect, kindness, and humility. Let us strive to embody good etiquette in all aspects of our lives and be ambassadors of Islam's beauty and teachings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us and help us in this endeavor.
