(Ghurar al-Hikam: Felicity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of striving for the betterment of the entire community as a means to attain true happiness and success. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound statement in light of the Quran.
The key words in this Hadith are (striving) "سَعْيُ" and (betterment of the community) "صَلاحِ الجُمْهُورِ". The word "سَعْيُ" implies active effort, exertion, and dedication towards a particular goal. It signifies going beyond mere words and intentions and taking practical steps to bring about positive change. "صَلاحِ الجُمْهُورِ" refers to the well-being, rectification, and improvement of the entire community, encompassing all its members.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of striving for the betterment of society and the welfare of others. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2),
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.
This verse encourages Muslims to work together in acts of righteousness and goodness, which undoubtedly includes striving for the betterment of the community.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
This verse highlights the importance of fostering unity and resolving conflicts within the Muslim community. Striving for the betterment of the community requires promoting harmony, resolving disputes, and establishing a just and compassionate society.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes the holistic nature of true happiness and success. It is not limited to individual achievements or personal gains but extends to the well-being of the entire community. When individuals actively work towards the betterment of society, they contribute to the collective welfare and create an environment conducive to growth and prosperity.
Striving for the betterment of the community has numerous motivations and consequences. Firstly, it aligns with the teachings of Islam, which emphasize social justice, compassion, and the promotion of good. By actively working towards the betterment of the community, Muslims fulfill their religious obligations and seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Secondly, striving for the betterment of the community fosters a sense of unity, cooperation, and brotherhood among Muslims. When individuals come together to address societal issues and uplift the marginalized, they strengthen the bonds of kinship and create a supportive and caring community.
Thirdly, striving for the betterment of the community has far-reaching consequences that extend beyond immediate benefits. It paves the way for a just and equitable society, where everyone has access to basic necessities, opportunities for growth, and a voice in decision-making processes. This, in turn, leads to social stability, economic prosperity, and overall well-being.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the immense responsibility we have as Muslims to actively contribute to the betterment of our communities. Whether it is through volunteering, advocating for social justice, or supporting charitable causes, every effort counts. By embodying the spirit of this Hadith, we can create a society that is characterized by compassion, justice, and prosperity.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of striving for the betterment of the community as a means to attain true happiness and success. It calls upon Muslims to actively work towards the well-being and rectification of society, in line with the teachings of the Quran. By doing so, we fulfill our religious obligations, foster unity and brotherhood, and contribute to the establishment of a just and compassionate society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody this noble teaching and make a positive impact in our communities.
