اَلإصرارُ سَجِيَّةُ الهَلْكى۔
Persistence [in sinning] is the trait of the doomed.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vices And Those Who Commit Them)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الإصرارُ سَجِيَّةُ الهَلْكى۔" This can be translated as,
Persistence [in sinning] is the trait of the doomed.
In this thought-provoking Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of persisting in sinful actions.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (al-israr) "الإصرار" refers to persistence or insistence, indicating a continuous and unwavering commitment to a particular action or behavior. (sajiyatu) "سَجِيَّةُ" can be translated as the trait or characteristic, while (al-halki) "الهَلْكى" refers to those who are doomed or destined for destruction.
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 81:
And [recall] when Allah took the covenant of the prophets, [saying], 'Whatever I give you of the Scripture and wisdom and then there comes to you a messenger confirming what is with you, you [must] believe in him and support him.' [Allah] said, 'Have you acknowledged and taken upon that My commitment?' They said, 'We have acknowledged it.' He said, 'Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses.'
This verse emphasizes the importance of adhering to the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ) and the subsequent Imams (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) who came to guide humanity. It highlights the obligation upon Muslims to believe in and support these chosen individuals. By persisting in sinning, one not only disobeys Allah's commandments but also rejects the guidance of the divinely appointed leaders.
Furthermore, Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 165 states,
And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.
This verse draws attention to the danger of persisting in sinful actions, as it leads one to love and prioritize other than Allah. By doing so, individuals deviate from the path of righteousness and jeopardize their spiritual well-being.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the consequences of persisting in sinful behavior. When one continuously engages in disobedience to Allah's commands, they distance themselves from His mercy and guidance. This persistence becomes a defining characteristic of their doomed fate. It is essential for Muslims to reflect upon this Hadith and strive to avoid persisting in sinful actions.
The motivation behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement is to awaken Muslims to the destructive nature of persisting in sinning. By highlighting the link between persistence and doom, he urges individuals to break free from the chains of sinful habits and seek repentance and forgiveness from Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The consequences of persisting in sinning are severe. Not only does it distance one from the mercy and guidance of Allah, but it also leads to a hardened heart and a diminished sense of moral conscience. By continuously indulging in sinful actions, individuals become desensitized to the harm they cause to themselves and others. This, in turn, perpetuates a cycle of destruction and spiritual decline.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims should strive to cultivate a sense of self-awareness and accountability. It is crucial to recognize the destructive nature of persisting in sinful behavior and take proactive steps towards repentance and self-improvement. By seeking forgiveness, engaging in acts of worship, and surrounding oneself with righteous company, one can break free from the chains of sin and strive towards a life of righteousness and piety.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to avoid persisting in sinful actions. By emphasizing the link between persistence and doom, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges individuals to break free from the destructive cycle of sinning and seek repentance and forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is through self-reflection, accountability, and a sincere commitment to righteousness that Muslims can safeguard their spiritual well-being and strive towards a life of piety and obedience to Allah's commands. May Allah guide us all on the straight path and protect us from the destructive consequences of persisting in sinning.
