Admonition is an excellent gift.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Admonition)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "نِعْمَ الهَديَّةُ الْمَوعِظَةُ۔" This can be translated as,

Admonition is an excellent gift.

In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the value and importance of admonition or advice.

The word (hadīthah) "هَديَّةُ" refers to a gift or present. It is something given to someone as a token of love, appreciation, or guidance. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing that admonition, or wise counsel, is a valuable gift that can benefit the recipient in numerous ways.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 44:

Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?

This verse reminds us of the importance of practicing what we preach. Admonition serves as a reminder for individuals to reflect upon their own actions and strive for righteousness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 6, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking advice and verifying information before taking any action. Admonition acts as a guiding light, enabling individuals to make informed decisions and avoid causing harm due to ignorance.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) recognized the power of admonition in shaping individuals' behavior and character. By offering sincere advice, we can help others rectify their mistakes, improve their actions, and grow spiritually. This gift of admonition not only benefits the recipient but also the one offering the advice, as it is an act of selflessness and a means of fulfilling our duty as Muslims to enjoin good and forbid evil.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on the value of admonition reminds us of the importance of fostering a culture of constructive criticism and guidance within our communities. By providing sincere advice and counsel, we can contribute to the betterment of society and the spiritual growth of individuals.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of admonition as an excellent gift. Through admonition, we can guide and support one another on the path of righteousness, ensuring that we fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims. Let us strive to offer sincere advice and counsel, always seeking to uplift and improve ourselves and our fellow Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and compassion to be a source of guidance and support for others.
