Hadith #9212

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his noble family, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مِنْ شِيَمِ الكِرامِ بَذْلُ النَّدى۔

This can be translated as,

Giving generously is from the traits of the munificent.

Let us explore the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (shiyam) "شِيَمِ" in this Hadith refers to the traits or characteristics of a person. It signifies the inherent qualities that define an individual's behavior and actions. In this context, it refers to the noble qualities that are associated with generosity and selflessness.

The term (badl) "بَذْلُ" means to give or bestow something willingly and generously. It implies going beyond the minimum requirements and giving with a sincere and open heart. It encompasses acts of charity, kindness, and selflessness.

The word (annada) "النَّدى" refers to the act of giving or bestowing. It signifies the act of providing assistance, support, or resources to others without expecting anything in return. It reflects a selfless attitude and a willingness to help those in need.

The Quran emphasizes the virtue of generosity and giving in numerous verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261),

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse highlights the immense rewards and blessings that come with giving generously in the way of Allah. Just as a single seed can produce a bountiful harvest, the act of giving multiplies and brings abundant blessings in this life and the hereafter.

Another verse that emphasizes the importance of giving is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse highlights the supplication of Prophet Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who sought Allah's assistance and provision. It teaches us that when we give generously and selflessly, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will provide for us and bless us with sustenance and strength.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of giving generously and selflessly. It encourages Muslims to cultivate the noble trait of munificence, which is characterized by a willingness to give without expecting anything in return.
