— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Cheerful And Smiling)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "البشر أول النائل" which translates to

Cheerfulness is the first gift.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for us as Muslims.

Let us first reflect on the word (bashar) "بشر", which means cheerfulness or gladness. It refers to a state of happiness, contentment, and positivity. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that this quality is the (awwal al-na'il) "أول النائل", meaning the first and foremost gift or blessing.

To understand the significance of cheerfulness as the first gift, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive and grateful attitude. In Surah An-Nahl, Allah says, (Quran 53:43)

And it is He who makes [people] laugh and weep

This verse reminds us that Allah has bestowed upon us the ability to experience joy and happiness. It is a gift from Him that we should cherish and express gratitude for.

Furthermore, the Quran encourages believers to seek happiness and contentment in their lives. In Surah Ar-Ra'd, Allah says, (Quran 13:28)

Indeed, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured

This verse highlights the importance of remembering Allah and seeking solace in His remembrance. When we maintain a cheerful disposition, we are more likely to remember Allah and find peace in our hearts.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that cheerfulness is not only a personal gift but also a means of spreading positivity and uplifting others. When we interact with others with a cheerful attitude, we create an atmosphere of joy and tranquility. This aligns with the Quranic teachings of kindness and compassion. Allah says in Surah Al-Isra, (Quran 2:83)

And speak to people good [words]

Our cheerful words and actions can have a profound impact on those around us, bringing comfort and happiness to their lives.

Moreover, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of maintaining a positive mindset, even in the face of challenges and difficulties. Life is filled with trials and tribulations, but it is our attitude that determines how we navigate through them. By embracing cheerfulness, we can find strength and resilience in the face of adversity.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. His emphasis on cheerfulness as the first gift serves as a reminder of his deep understanding of human nature and the importance of cultivating a positive outlook. By following his teachings, we can strive to embody this quality and spread happiness in our lives and the lives of others.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that cheerfulness is the first and foremost gift. It reminds us to maintain a positive attitude, express gratitude to Allah, and spread joy to others. By embodying this quality, we can find solace in the remembrance of Allah and navigate through life's challenges with resilience. May Allah bless us with the gift of cheerfulness and enable us to spread happiness in the world.
