(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

بِحُسنِ المُوافَقَةِ تَدُومُ الصُّحبَةُ۔

This can be translated as,

Through mutual understanding, companionship lasts.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (husn) "حُسْنِ" in the Hadith refers to "goodness" or "excellence." It implies the presence of positive qualities and virtues. In the context of companionship, it signifies the importance of having good qualities and virtues when interacting with others. It emphasizes the need for sincerity, kindness, empathy, and understanding in our relationships.

The term (al-muwafaqah) "المُوافَقَةِ" means "mutual agreement" or "harmony." It highlights the necessity of finding common ground and shared values in our interactions with others. It implies the ability to understand and respect differing opinions, while still maintaining unity and cohesion.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10),

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse emphasizes the importance of resolving conflicts and differences among believers, promoting unity and brotherhood. It encourages us to seek mutual understanding and agreement in order to maintain strong and lasting companionship.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Imran (3:103), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.

This verse emphasizes the need for unity and cohesion among Muslims. It reminds us to come together, united by our shared faith, and to avoid division and discord. Mutual understanding and agreement play a crucial role in fostering this unity and preserving the strength of our companionship.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to prioritize mutual understanding and agreement in their relationships. When we strive for goodness and excellence in our interactions, and when we seek harmony and common ground with others, our companionship becomes enduring and meaningful.

By practicing mutual understanding, we create an environment of respect, empathy, and compassion. We learn to appreciate the perspectives and experiences of others, even if they differ from our own. This leads to stronger bonds of friendship and brotherhood, as we build bridges of understanding and unity.

Conversely, when we lack mutual understanding and fail to find common ground, our companionship becomes fragile and prone to discord. Misunderstandings and conflicts arise, leading to strained relationships and potential divisions within the Muslim community. Therefore, it is essential for us to embody the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive for mutual understanding in all aspects of our lives.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that through mutual understanding and agreement, companionship can endure and thrive. By embodying the qualities of goodness and excellence, and by seeking harmony and common ground with others, we strengthen our relationships and foster unity within the Muslim community. Let us reflect upon this profound wisdom and strive to implement it in our daily lives, for the betterment of ourselves and our ummah. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice mutual understanding and maintain lasting companionship.
