الخِلالُ المُنْتِجَةُ لِلشَرِّ الكِذْبُ، والبُخْلُ، والجَوْرُ، وَالجَهْلُ۔
The attributes that lead to evil are lying, stinginess, injustice and ignorance.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights four attributes that lead to evil: lying, stinginess, injustice, and ignorance. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of these attributes and explore their implications in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us examine the attribute of lying. Lying is a grave sin that undermines trust, spreads falsehood, and disrupts the harmony within society. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in the Quran about the consequences of lying. In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah says, (Quran 2:42)
And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].
This verse emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and the prohibition of deceit. Lying not only damages relationships but also leads to the erosion of moral values within a community.
Secondly, the attribute of stinginess is condemned in Islam. Stinginess is the opposite of generosity, which is highly praised in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, (Quran 76:8)
And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive.
This verse highlights the virtue of giving and selflessness. Stinginess, on the other hand, leads to a selfish mindset and a disregard for the needs of others. It hinders the development of a compassionate and caring society.
Thirdly, the attribute of injustice is a grave sin that disrupts the balance and harmony established by Allah. Injustice can manifest in various forms, such as oppression, discrimination, and exploitation. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against injustice in Surah Al-Ma'idah, stating, (Quran 4:135)
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.
This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice, even if it goes against our personal interests. Injustice not only harms individuals but also undermines the foundations of a just and equitable society.
Lastly, the attribute of ignorance is a state of lacking knowledge and understanding. Ignorance can lead to misguided beliefs, misconceptions, and irrational behavior. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages seeking knowledge in the Quran, stating, (Quran 20:114)
And say, 'My Lord, increase me in knowledge.'
This verse highlights the importance of acquiring knowledge and understanding. Ignorance can lead to harmful actions and decisions, as it blinds individuals from the truth and prevents them from making informed choices.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can see that these attributes - lying, stinginess, injustice, and ignorance - have severe consequences for individuals and society as a whole. They breed corruption, discord, and a lack of empathy. As Muslims, it is our duty to strive against these negative attributes and cultivate their opposites - truthfulness, generosity, justice, and knowledge.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his profound knowledge and wisdom. His teachings and actions exemplified the virtues that counter these negative attributes. By following his example and seeking guidance from the Quran, we can strive towards a society built upon truth, generosity, justice, and knowledge. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to overcome these negative attributes and embody the qualities that lead to righteousness and goodness.
