Hadith #4249

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The validity of an opinion is [measured] by the sincerity of the adviser.

The word (salah) "صَلاحُ" in this Hadith refers to the validity or correctness of an opinion or decision. The word (ra'i) "رَّأيِ" means opinion or viewpoint, while (nush) "نُصْحِ" means sincerity or genuineness. Lastly, (almustashir) "المُسْتَشِيرِ" refers to the adviser or the one who provides counsel.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking advice and guidance from others. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 3:159)

And consult them in the matter. Then when you have decided, rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him]

This verse highlights the significance of seeking counsel from others before making decisions, as it leads to better outcomes and demonstrates reliance on Allah.

Furthermore, the Quran encourages believers to seek advice from those who possess knowledge and wisdom. In Surah Al-Nahl, Allah says, (Quran 16:44)

And We revealed to you [O Muhammad] the message that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them and that they might give thought

You are the best nation produced for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah

Thus, sincere advice contributes to the betterment of society as a whole.

Additionally, the sincerity of the adviser plays a crucial role in the acceptance and effectiveness of their counsel. When advice is given with pure intentions and genuine concern, it is more likely to be accepted and acted upon. This fosters trust and strengthens the bond between the adviser and the one seeking guidance.

Conversely, insincere advice can lead to disastrous consequences. In Surah Al-Mumtahanah, Allah warns against taking advice from those who harbor ill intentions, saying, (Quran 60:1)

O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth

This verse cautions against seeking advice from those who are not sincere in their intentions, as it can lead to misguided decisions and harmful outcomes.
