(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ داهَنَ نَفْسَهُ هَجَمَتْ بِهِ عَلَى المَعاصِى المُحَرَّمَةِ۔

This Hadith carries a beautiful message about the consequences of indulging in self-flattery and leniency towards one's desires.

Let us first analyze the key words in this Hadith. The word (dahana) "داهَنَ" refers to dealing leniently with oneself, while (nafsahu) "نَفْسَهُ" translates to "his soul" or "his self." The term (hajamat) "هَجَمَتْ" means to rush or attack, and (bihi) "بِهِ" signifies "towards." Lastly, (al-ma'asi al-muharramah) "المَعاصِى المُحَرَّمَةِ" refers to forbidden sins.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Yusuf (12:53),

And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.

This verse highlights the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil and the constant struggle to resist its temptations.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qiyamah (75:2-5), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Does man think that We will not assemble his bones? Yes, We are able [even] to proportion his fingertips. But man desires to continue in sin. He asks, 'When is the Day of Resurrection?'

From these verses, we understand that the soul has a natural inclination towards sin and desires to indulge in forbidden actions. If one deals leniently with their soul, allowing it to fulfill its desires without restraint, it will inevitably rush towards committing forbidden sins. This leniency towards oneself can manifest in various ways, such as justifying sinful behavior, neglecting self-discipline, or ignoring the consequences of one's actions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, warns us about the dangers of self-flattery and leniency. By recognizing the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil, we can take proactive measures to restrain and discipline ourselves. This requires self-awareness, self-reflection, and constant vigilance over our thoughts, actions, and intentions.

Indulging in forbidden sins not only distances us from the path of righteousness but also has severe consequences in this world and the hereafter. The Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Isra (17:32),

And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.

This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding sins that are explicitly prohibited by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Moreover, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:90), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.

This verse highlights the detrimental effects of engaging in activities that are forbidden, as they are considered impure and influenced by Satan.

Therefore, it is crucial for Muslims to be mindful of their actions and constantly strive to resist the temptations of their souls. By disciplining ourselves and adhering to the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can protect ourselves from the allure of forbidden sins and strive towards righteousness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant and cautious in dealing with their souls. Indulging in self-flattery and leniency towards one's desires can lead to a rush towards committing forbidden sins. By recognizing the innate inclination of the soul towards evil and taking proactive measures to discipline ourselves, we can protect our faith, attain spiritual growth, and seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all on the straight path and grant us the strength to resist the temptations of our souls.
