إنَّ اللّهَ سُبْحانَهُ يُحِبُّ المُتَعَفِّفَ الحَيِيَّ التَّقِيَّ، الرَّاضِيَ۔
Verily Allah, the Glorified, loves the one who is chaste, modest, pious and satisfied [with His will].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Chastity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the qualities that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) loves in a person. The Hadith states,
Verily Allah, the Glorified, loves the one who is chaste, modest, pious and satisfied [with His will].
Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith. The word (muta'affeef) "مُتَعَفِّفَ" refers to someone who is chaste and maintains self-restraint in their desires. They have control over their physical and emotional urges, and they strive to protect their purity and modesty. The word (al-hayy) "الحَيِيَّ" refers to someone who is modest and possesses a sense of shame. They are cautious in their behavior, avoiding anything that may lead to immodesty or indecency. The word (at-taqiyya) "التَّقِيَّ" refers to someone who is pious and God-conscious. They fear Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strive to fulfill His commands and avoid His prohibitions. Lastly, the word (ar-raadiya) "الرَّاضِيَ" refers to someone who is satisfied with the decree and will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). They accept whatever Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has ordained for them, whether it be in times of ease or hardship.
To understand the significance of these qualities, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:26),
O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best.
This verse emphasizes the importance of modesty and chastity, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has provided us with clothing to cover our bodies and preserve our dignity. It is through modesty that we can protect ourselves from falling into sin and maintain a sense of honor and respect.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.
This verse highlights the importance of piety and righteousness. It is not our wealth, status, or lineage that determines our worth in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but rather our level of taqwa (piety) and our adherence to His commands.
Moreover, the concept of being satisfied with the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is beautifully illustrated in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.'
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for these qualities. By being chaste, modest, pious, and satisfied with the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we can attain the love and pleasure of our Creator. These qualities are interconnected and reinforce one another. When we maintain chastity and modesty, it strengthens our piety and helps us to be content with whatever Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has decreed for us.
In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a guide for Muslims to cultivate these noble qualities in their lives. By embodying chastity, modesty, piety, and satisfaction with the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we can strive to attain the love and pleasure of our Creator. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these qualities and may He shower His blessings upon us all.
