قَدْ يَعْطِبُ المُتَحَذِّرُ۔
One who is overly cautious may be destroyed.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Cautious)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "قَدْ يَعْطِبُ المُتَحَذِّرُ۔" which translates to
One who is overly cautious may be destroyed.
This Hadith highlights the potential dangers of excessive caution and the negative consequences that can arise from it.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words used. The word (ya'thibu) "يَعْطِبُ" means "may be destroyed" or "may suffer harm." It implies that excessive caution can lead to detrimental outcomes. The word (al-mutahaddir) "المُتَحَذِّرُ" refers to someone who is overly cautious or excessively careful.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages believers to strike a balance between caution and trust in Him. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286, Allah says,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that while we should take precautions and be mindful of potential risks, we should also have faith in Allah's wisdom and trust that He will not burden us beyond our capacity.
Excessive caution can sometimes stem from a lack of trust in Allah's plan and a fear of the unknown. In Surah Al-Tawbah, verse 51, Allah says,
Say, 'Never will we be struck except by what Allah has decreed for us; He is our protector.'
This verse emphasizes the importance of relying on Allah as our ultimate protector and recognizing that harm or destruction can only come to us if it is within His divine decree.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the potential dangers of being overly cautious. While caution is important, excessive fear and hesitation can hinder our progress and prevent us from seizing opportunities for growth and success. It can lead to missed chances, stagnation, and ultimately, destruction.
For example, imagine a person who is constantly afraid of taking risks and making decisions. They may hesitate to pursue new opportunities, whether in their personal or professional life, out of fear of failure or the unknown. As a result, they may miss out on valuable experiences, personal growth, and potential success. Their excessive caution can become a barrier to their own development and fulfillment.
It is important to strike a balance between caution and taking calculated risks. In Surah Al-Hadid, verse 25, Allah says,
Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice.
This verse highlights the importance of maintaining balance in all aspects of our lives, including our decision-making process. We should seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to ensure that our actions are in line with justice and righteousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to strike a balance between caution and trust in Allah. While it is important to be mindful of potential risks, excessive caution can hinder our progress and prevent us from seizing opportunities for growth and success. We should rely on Allah's wisdom and guidance, and have faith that He will protect us from harm. May Allah grant us the wisdom to navigate life's challenges with balance and trust in Him.
