Hadith #4886

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

أسْفَهُ السُّفَهاءِ المُتَبَجِّحُ بِفُحْشِ الكَلامِ۔

This Hadith highlights the foolishness of those individuals who boast and take pride in using foul language. Let us delve into the profound wisdom contained within this statement and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (asfahu) "أسْفَهُ" refers to the most dim-witted or foolish individuals. These are the people who lack wisdom, understanding, and intellect. They are characterized by their ignorance and lack of insight. The term (sufaha) "السُّفَهاءِ" emphasizes the plural form of this foolishness, indicating that it is a widespread phenomenon among certain individuals.

Furthermore, the phrase (al-mutabajjihu bi-fuhshi al-kalam) "المُتَبَجِّحُ بِفُحْشِ الكَلامِ" describes the specific behavior of these foolish individuals. They engage in boasting and pridefully display their foul language. They take pleasure in using vulgar and offensive words, seeking attention and validation through their crude speech.

The Quran provides guidance and admonition against such behavior. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking in a manner that is good, kind, and respectful. It reminds us to choose our words wisely and avoid engaging in foul language.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of refraining from insulting or ridiculing others, as it is a form of disobedience and a sign of wrongdoing.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to refrain from engaging in such foolish behavior.
